Flagstaff KAFZ 99.7FM Ash Fork

Alex Media's long-dormant KRCF property in Lead, South Dakota, has just received a wake-up call from the FCC Media Bureau:

"MB deletes condition from KRCF(FM) construction permit, ends tolling of construction deadline for KRCF(FM), and notifies KZMX-FM of intent to cancel KZMX-FM implied STA to operate on its old channel"

"We remind AMI that, as of the date of this letter, it has 6 months and 19 days (i.e., until July 30, 2022) to complete construction of KRCF(FM)."

This is an Auction 93 property, grabbed for $45K and requires some serious horsepower - 100kw ERP.

KAFZ (Alex Media) filed an STA on 9 February notifying the FCC that the station went silent on 1/31. Per the STA submission : "Station was down due to internet carrier change. However when the signal was brought back online Transmiiter Failed. Station must now remain off air while Transmitter is diagnosed and either repaired or replaced. We will keep staff advised of the situation."

This STA extension was filed on 30 September:

"Alex Media, Inc. (“AMI”) hereby files a request for extension of the existing Silent STA for KAFZ(FM) (File No. BLSTA-20220207AAI). "

"As discussed in the original request for the Silent STA, KAFZ experienced a transmitter failure at its current licensed site (BLH-20150623ABL). Since that time AMI has explored the option of repairing the existing transmitter. However, it appears that the transmitter cannot not be repaired in any cost-effective way and a new transmitter is needed. AMI has reached out to several suppliers. Additional time is needed due to delayed availability of a suitable replacement resulting from supply chain issues."

"Additionally, while AMI has been experiencing a delay in obtaining a replacement transmitter for its current operations, AMI has also been exploring the possibility of simply building the station with different equipment at its alternate site a CP for which was issued by the Commission on January 14, 2022 (CP File No 0000158738). AMI has initiated discussions with the site owner at the CP site regarding a tower lease and the equipment and logistics required for construction at that site in fall and winter. AMI would also require the additional time if it were to attempt completion of the CP construction as an alternate means of resuming operations."

It's like on again off again for 99.7 KAFZ in Ash Fork, AZ.
No music no visible carrier as the splatter from 99.9 FM Prescott Valley is audible at 99.75 FM on my CC Radio2.
RX 10-20 is NW Chino Valley, AZ at approximately 4:50 PM 10/5/22...

KPUT Mona UT, the sister station to KAFZ, just filed to revive an expired CP which would give coverage into Provo.

Sure ... as long as it is not adjacent with the tank when you file for non-directional. . Some directional arrays get messed up if the wide legs interfere with pattern.

I learned there are some cool solutions out there for mounting directly to the tank.

Never knew you could put an antenna on a water tower….

What is now KBRY 92.3 Sargent, NE with 100kw halfway between sargent and broken bow was originally permitted for 100kw on 92.1 from somewhere else, the religious organziaiton, my bridge radio that had the permit downgraded it to a few hundred watts from the Sargent, NE water tower

I drove through Ash Fork the other (snowy/rainy) day. KAFZ is on the air but they seemed to have hiccups in their audio feed. Coverage to the east is challenging but the signal can be heard up to 20 miles westward on I-40.

KAFZ's "sister" station, KPUT in Mona, Utah was just sold for $150K. With a CP for 16 kw ERP to reach into Provo, the buyer (North Point Broadcasting LLC), saw value in the KPUT license. Jean and Sherman Hill, from White Marsh, Maryland (northeast of Baltimore) are the buyers.
