KAGM names new PD

did anyone see this in Billboard:
Veteran country programmer Lee Logan has been named PD of American General Media's FM talk station KAGM Albuquerque, N.M., effective immediately.

Logan briefly worked as the Nashville-based director of affiliate relations for ABC Radio Networks' "American Country Countdown" before taking the Albuquerque job.

He previously was PD of Cumulus' country WSM-FM Nashville, and later served in a consulting PD role for Clear Channel's KBKO Bakersfield, Calif. He is best known for his long stint programming KNEW/KSAN San Francisco.

It was what, a month into the station when the first PD left? It took them 10 months to find a replacement? Why even bother at this point. That their search for a new PD took this long indicates some big problems in management at AGM. Do they even want this turkey to fly? Any predictions or suggestions on what Logan will do or should do to try and pull KAGM out of the toilet?

they should either
1 can the talk and switch it to a comedy channel
2 get rid of on air talent and follow the Jack-FM playbook

I certainly hope that it's not too late for KAGM/KBOM. It seems to me like there'll have to be some major changes at the station to get it to compete with KKOB, if that is what they want to do. What changes those could be, I'm not sure. What kinds of changes would everybody here like to see?

My theory: format change coming. Logan is known for being a country programmer (and a very good one at that), though he has done other formats, including group PD for South Central Communications (a company that specializes in soft AC). However, I can't think of a talk station he's ever programmed. There may be one, but I can't think of it. I don't think KAGM will flip to country, but I don't think the talk format is long for the world. You don't normally bring someone considered to be a music PD on board to run a talk format, even if format-specific experience is less important than what many people think it should be.

Ditto to everything you said.

So lets say they flip. Where does King Larry go?<P ID="signature">______________

King Larry? King of what? Once Larry walked away from KOB and nothing happened to KOB's ratings the notion that Larry was the king of anything quickly evaporated. The continued poor ratings that Larry has brought to KAGM cemented the wake up call that Larry was not the reason behind KOB's high ratings.

Tony Lynn moved across town and brought his audience with him. Larry showed that he is no Tony Lynn. TJ Trout is so obviously not threatened by Larry or KAGM that he actually had Dianne Anderson sit in and do the news on KZRR the other day, letting her plug that toilet bowl of an FM talker (His rationale made sense, if KAGM goes up in the ratings KOB will go down and KZRR becomes #1 in the market.)

As to where does Larry go? AGM already asked Albuquerque "Where's Larry?" Albuquerque didn't care.

I predict that he will become a flunky at Rich Ford. One year from now he will be in the showroom happy to show you the features on an F-150 Supercab. Any other predictions?

> So lets say they flip. Where does King Larry go?

I'd say he'd either get the boot or go absolutely nowhere and anchor the morning show. After all, Larry has more experience doing music radio than he does talk as KOB 770 was a full-service AC until a little more than a decade ago, and he had done mostly music prior to that time. In fact, I think an AC that is very active in the community would be a good choice for 106.3, especially with KMGA sounding staler than ever before. He may be overpaid and opinionated, and he may not have been the driving force behind KOB. However, Larry's still a topical host who has proven he can successfully anchor a top-rated show, even if his current program ranks closer to the bottom.

AGM made every mistake in the book:

1) Put an AM styled Talker of FM in spite of category killer competition

2) Hired the wrong talent at the start

3) Had no strategic vision or tactical approach to beating KOB, except
for "we're FM". But the 35-64's didn't care, KOB was fine with them.

4) FM Cume available for station was unfamiliar & uninterested in the
personalities at KAGM. They should have been younger-hipper, not old.

5) Management stayed too long with format, now it must shift the focus
to a younger target audience, or blow it up.

He runs for Governor.

Oops. Tried that, huh?

Unless, of course that person, Logan in this case is looking for a job that pays real money instead of being an affiliate director for ACC, which probably pays nothing.

Don't know about what ACC would pay its affiliate directors. I don't so much question Logan going to KAGM as I do KAGM seeking out a new PD and picking one who is regarded as a music PD if it intends to remain talk. Don't get me wrong. I understand format specific experience can be less important than many other factors, including ability to develop talent, keeping talent on the same page, and interpreting data. Something, however, just doesn't add up here.

Hey, do you remember that the posting that AGM did for this gig said one of the responsibilities was "developing relationships with recording companies and distributors"?

At the time people were saying that AGM was sloppy because you would not need those skills as a talk station PD.

Maybe KAGM was showing their hand regarding a pending change of format.

Think about it - they advertised for a music PD for their talk station - and then they went and hired a music PD for their talk station. Are Talk-FM's days numbered?

Do they go county with Lariat Larry in the morning? Smooth Jazz with Laidback Larry? Jammin' Oldies with Lowride Larry?
