Greetings All,

Quick question posted to members who are on the coast. I'm interested specifically in KAHS-LP 106.5 operated from of Aberdeen High School.

I'm curious because I've approached them to pick up my show. Does anyone have some skinny on them? Automation? Coverage area? Looks like Aberdeen is solid. Do they make it to Ocean Shores? Do they run 24/7? Format is alternative rock from what I've read.

I chatted with Chuck Veloni a couple days ago. Nice guy, going to preview the show and then we'll chat.

I appreciate anything anyone can fill me in on.

:)

One of the few high school stations actually operated by students. Chuck Veloni is the instructor. They have a live show in the morning, and like most radio stations, operates with the aid of computer automation the rest of the broadcast day. The station is 24/7. Aside from the instructor, staffing is by the students in the broadcasting program.

Since it's an LPFM, coverage is limited to Aberdeen-Hoquiam. The antenna is not high enough to put a good signal into Ocean Shores.

Chuck interned at my stations before the station went on the air several years ago, and I remain a member of his Advisory Committee. KAHS provides the only local outlet for new groups.

Thanks Bill for the information.

Yes, student stations that the students really get involved in the management are becoming rare. KTCV 88.1/Tri-Cities was like that for many years. Starting this school year they had to alter a few things. Instructor Ed Dailey has taken more of a PD role. Most of the advanced students now have regular shifts they tend to via NexGen. Listenership is up for them and the station is much more interactive.

I'm not on Ed's Advisory Committee, but I agree with his changes. It's been good for the station. I graduated from the program in 1992, so I have a soft spot for KTCV.

I know changes are in store for KYVT 88.5/Yakima. The radio program died and what was left got absorbed into the digital media class. Rumors have been swirling that the Yakima School District may dump it. It's too bad.

To KASH-LP, Chuck seemed surprised I was offering my program for free. He asked me why, being curious. I told him three things - I'm passionate about the format of my show (AAA), I want to offer it into areas that don't have AAA programming and I'm between gigs and am trying to keep my chops fresh. Getting the show out there and maintaining is good for the resume. Additionally , I told him even after I land somewhere, I'll continue to provide it - because it's a passion.

I produce the show at home and built it with adobe audition. Other than a 2:00 hole at the bottom of the hour, it's entirely self contained.

Regards,
:)

I've been in the area before and I can get on to SR-109 heading W toward the ocean beaches, and by a mile or two out of Hoquiam 106.5 turns into noise and static.
