KAKC icon Lee Bayley

Stan, thanks for the link to the interesting video! Scooter Seagraves had already informed me of Lee Bayley's which is sad. Tulsa was my birth city where my grandmother and my close cousin lived, so I often spent time there on holidays and in the summer. Lee was always warm, sincere, knowledgeable, friendly, smooth, and enjoyable to listen to! And I admired him as a program director for how the Drake format was executed so well by the great Big 97 Jocks he had hired and directed. The timing of his passing, the day before the passing of Danny Williams, hits me in a unique way. These were morning personalities and program directors of the leading station in my two towns.

Wow. Yes. This is sad but ironic that two of the most significant PDs in that area in the state died at almost the same time. RIP Mr. Bayley.

Thanks to Michael Elder at Fox News Radio for the following info:

Memorial services will be held tomorrow to honor the life of broadcaster Lee Bayley, who died on Monday, February 18. Bayley was probably best known for his stint as VP of Programming for Drake-Chenault in the '70s, but his career began humbly at the age of 15 in Arkansas, according to LARadio.com. After a stretch with Armed Forces Radio and TV, Bayley met legendary programmer Bill Drake and moved to Tulsa, OK as one of the "Big Seven" jocks at Top 40 KAKC-AM. He also hosted Dance Party on KOTV Channel 6 from 1965 to 1970. The following year, Bayley relocated to Los Angeles as Drake-Chenault's VP of Programming. In 1978 Bayley left Drake-Chenault to become PD of KIQQ/Los Angeles. Two years later he moved to Dallas as the GM of TM Programming before embarking on a long and successful consulting career. According to KOTV, Bayley retired in West Texas about 10 years ago, but his daughter said he had remained active, emceeing community events and serving as a volunteer firefighter.

"Lee was a true gentleman who helped me when I started my research business," said Mark Kassof of Mark Kassof & Co. "Lee really knew and understood what made great radio and I learned a lot working with him." Another industry pro who knew Bayley well over the years was Charlie Cook, Director of Programming and Brand Management for West Virginia Radio Corporation, who summed up the feelings of many when he posted this message on his Facebook page, "Please take a second and think good thoughts about Lee Bayley, who passed on Monday. He was a real radio guy and a darn good person."
