KALY AM sold

Reports: KALY has been sold to KD Radio Inc. with LMA to follow. Will this station switch to oldies?

Does ABQ really need another oldies station? Bewteen 1600/107.5 and the classic rock stations I would believe the market must be saturated with the format. But what other choices are there for a graveyard AM?

The classic rock stations don't qualify as oldies. They go after the same age group, but the audience composition is different with oldies skewing more female.

The Albuquerque market has had more signals than it could really support for the last 25 years or so. It's always been one of the more volatile markets in terms of format changes. Albuquerque, Colorado Springs and Salt Lake City have the most stations per capita, and the result is a lot of middle of the pack stations that are barely making, or barely losing, money in all three.

When it comes to KDSK, it really seems more like a labor of love for the owners. KDSK 92.7 does quite well in Grants. It probably won't do as well in Albuquerque because it's on a graveyard AM signal, but I don't think the owners care too much. If they can make their bills, they'll be happy. KDSK will also be heard on a translator in Santa Fe on 105.5 before long.

What is kind of interesting is that the trend is for an AM station to try and get on FM via a translator or by flipping an existing FM. This may be oen of the few cases of going the other way, where an FM goes to AM :)

Owner of KDSK is a partner friend of vanguard media owner. KDSK owner is actually programing 107.5 right now. They feel that KDSK gets a 20 share in Grants which means they have 2,500 of the 11,000 market and The vanguard owner has told me that KDSK can get a 20 share in Albuquerque. The Vanguard owner was consulting the KALY owners for about a year and they wanted to sell a year ago
so he put the two together. Question vanguard LMA's KIVA and that Station was running talk programs on KALLY so that they could simulcast them on KIVA, since KALY has a better signal. What will become of that.

translators in October 107.5 is set to move to 94.5 will kally go on 107.5?

If I go to Radio-Locator and put in Grants, I get about 5 signals with really good listenable quality. So by advance division, a 20 share is what you might resonably expect.

I thought a kid was programming the station (before the sale). One of the radio trades did a podcast interview with her, and it looked like things were going well. What happened?

A kid both owned and programmed the station. I never heard the interview, but I remember hearing about it, and, yes, it seemed like things were going well.

JenniRadio, as it was known, apparently had an affiliate in Grants. I think it was on 91.9. I'm not sure if it's still around since KALY 1240 dropped the format last week, but it was just announced about a month ago.

That 20 share KDSK gets is #1 in Grants, and I believe it's by a pretty big margin. However, I do agree that there's no chance that format would get a 20 share in Albuquerque, even if they could buy 96.3 and air it there. Albuquerque has a lot more competition for the same audience, and no one's had above a 15 in at least 20 years!

A 20 share means, today, about a 3 rating... meaning, if all 11,000 are above 12, about 300 or 400 people listening at any given time.

"Share" is the percentage of people who are actually listening to the radio who are listening to a given station. Since the diary market average listening level is about 15% to 20% of all people, a 20 share is one fifth of the 15%.

I am listening to 1240am as we speak, on my computer ..it's still Jenniradio, not oldies ????

You're most likely listening to a direct feed of JenniRadio not connected to the station. KDSK is streaming at KDSK.com.
