But his late night show on NBC is from LA isn't it?
Yes it is. It used to be based in New York until a few years ago, but the new format of Last Call doesn't really have a studio anymore so does it really matter?

What excitement. Could this be bigger than KHJ taking down KFWB and KRLA? ( for those who remember) The thing I like about Carson Daly is he reminds me of a combination of Johnny Carson and Jon Stewart.

If Brian McKnight leaves for nights on AMP it would have to be because KTWV is flipping and CBS needs a home for his contract.......either way, it would be a mistake

No, in 1965 we were talking of as much as 25 shares for the format, and now we have about 8 shares, with KIIS off about a share from its pre-Amp level, and Amp having generated over two shares from places other than KIIS.

Since Arbitron's December includes the first weeks of KOST doing Christmas, the top 5 stations will likely be KOST, KRTH, KIIS, KFI and probably Jack ahead of AMP, with a whole bunch of other stations in the same range as AMP, such as KLVE, KBIG, Power, and maybe even Hot and KLOS... all within a couple of tenths of a share point spread, as you can see from the November numbers on this site.

There is not going to be a massacre like the old Top 40 battles, because both stations will be very successful, and there will be less than a share of separation between the two. Just not enough for this to be exciting.

In fact, I see a very real possibility that adding any kind of morning show and thus, talk, to AMP may turn out to be less than the anticipated success.

Not really. But then that may mean Carson has to live in LA to be working at 97.1 AMP Radio. I wonder if he may call it quits with his late show and just stick with the morning show. Also doesn't Carson do the New Years Eve show for NBC?

You probably haven't seen the new format of Carson's show yet then. His late night show now doesn't have a studio, studio audience and monologue. His late night show is virtually just interviews and performances from places not only around LA but around the United States. What he does for the show now is just do voiceovers and do an interview or two from let's say a restaurant, bar or nightclub. He doesn't go to the performances so his job with Last Call is just a few hours compared to his last show where he has to sit down with comedy writers etc.
He has a lot of time to do the AMP show compared to let's say Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon or Jay Leno, so it all works out.

Carson's show is bound to increase AMP's morning TSL which is bound to increase their overall share a tad.

Carson Daly is one personality I just don't get the appeal of at all.

I'm not a Ryan Seacrest fan and don't fall into his demographic as I'm a 40+ male, but I understand his appeal and why he is successful on the radio.

But I don't understand what the attraction of Carson's morning show would be for any listener. Maybe someone can explain it.

well let me take a stab at it or at least give my thoughts.

I had the exact same thought of Ryan Seacrest at first. Being another 40+ male as well,
I couldn't stand Ryan. However because I worked in CHR I HAD (and I mean HAD) to listen to
top 40 music and it was excruciating for me. You see I LOVE rock. I live for ROCK and I worked
for a CHR station for many, many years. It is a process one must go through. :)

Ryan's success is that he is safe. No one other than soccer moms and some 18-34 girls live for
Ryan or are P1 listeners because of him, yet he has huge appeal. Why?

He's so consistently average it works for his target audience. Why?

I believe that the key is that he offends no one. Take Rush Limbaugh for example, half this
country loves Rush and would follow him anywhere and the other half hates his guts. Well
Ryan has both sides because he is very milk toast yet appealing to pretty much everyone. When you tune into
Ryan you know what you're going to get. If you tune into CHR you know what you're going to get.
The number #1 song played 8 times a day.

If you look at this from a political perspective it might make more sense. Matt Damon came out publicly and
took a stand against a political candidate. He also was passionate in his message and delivery. Good for him and
he certainly is a great actor, but a large amount of people will not support him ever again. He really pissed them
off and that is 50% of his paying audience. Ryan never comes close to that behavior, thus keeping the entire cume
for his entire realm. No one truly loves Ryan, (certainly none that would admit it)
but he's so consistent and knows perfectly how to play the game that no one hates him.

The expectation of Ryan is not to have the societal impact of a Howard Stern, just the numbers.

Milk toast may not taste great every day, but it's easy, healthy and it fills you up.

I think Carson Daily will do the exact same thing, but be just a touch more real and hip than Ryan. It's 'safe' radio..

Isn't that exactly what Top 40 jocks on Drake or ABC during the 60's were supposed to be? Wasn't Casey Kasem like that? You never heard any political opinions on KHJ or WABC, imaging differences not withstanding. Bob Dayton was fired from WABC for a political comment. I doubt that anyone on KHJ, KRLA, or KFWB said one thing about Viet Nam or Mississippi.

I doubt that anyone on KHJ, KRLA, or KFWB said one thing about Viet Nam or Mississippi.

The incident that got Dayton fired at WABC wasn't political per se, more a matter of unbelievably bad timing. As the story goes, Bob played 16 Candles on the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, and said something like "Happy Birthday, Hiroshima." . At the same time, the wife of ABC President Leonard Goldensen was in the building, hosting a meeting of the Hiroshima Maidens - a group of Japanese women who were horribly disfigured by the blast.

For the most part, Top 40 jocks in the 60s stayed away from politics. Can you imagine Bill Drake letting his DJs give their opinions about the Vietnam War? The idea is laughable. But KRLA - on the other hand - had positioned itself in the late 60s as the hipper, edgier alternative to KHJ. The Credibility Gap (satirical news with Harry Shearer et al) was blatanly anti-Nixon, and anti-Vietnam. When Dave Hull left KRLA the first time (68 or 69), the rumor was that he was politically conservative, and was angry at the station for the blatant left-wing politics espoused on air.

KRLA's Top 40 jocks generally stayed away from politics, but the more alternative night-time jocks like Jimmy Rabbit strayed into those subjects from time to time. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the "hipper" KFWB jocks like B. Mitchell Reed made some anti-war jibes occasionally. I know he did later at KMET.

Even though we made fun of Casey Kasem for being the corniest and squarest DJ at KRLA, he turned out to be the most politically radical off-air - very left wing, and anti-war. He's also vegan, and was later (and probably still is) an advocate for pro-Palestinian causes.

Awesome that AMP is getting a morning show... I hope they let him talk all he wants and not force him to shut up and play music... now all they just need is live club mixes just like KIIS-FM does and then I'll "make the switch".

I remember in one of my first posts on this boards in the 1st or 2nd month of AMP's launch, everyone doubted the fact that AMP could have the possibility of breaking into the #1 spot, or even in the Top 5. In fact, they said that AMP's performance was not impressive or even noticable. Now that AMP is #4 overall and #3 in cume with Carson going on mornings, there's a good chance that their TSL will increase, that will bring their overall share increase. There's a good chance that Carson will be shut up and be forced to play the music. People these days don't want the traditional prank call and 10 minute interview morning show, they want a grab-n-go style morning drive, with music, entertainment news, some real news and giveaways.

Try 16 times a day or more. In a world of hour and 1/2 Power rotations. You can hit 15-16 times a day with your 5 powers easily.

Thank you for telling me...the move is great, but I was still scratching my head. I wonder if CBS will bring in anyone for WXRK in the mornings? Or, would CBS want to bring in anyone to work on weekends on KAMP?
From the "News" section of the www.radio-info.com site:

"America's Got Talent" host Nick Cannon to handle mornings on CBS Radio's "92.3 Now" in New York
Published on Tuesday, December 15, 2009

CBS just recently hired Carson Daly for mornings on its new Los Angeles CHR, “Amp 97.1” KAMP-FM, and today it’s announcing that former People Magazine “Sexiest Man Alive” contender Nick Cannon will do mornings on “Now” WXRK in the Big Apple. Among Cannon’s many professional credits – movie roles in “Drumline”, “Garfield: The Movie”, “Shall We Dance”, and “Underclassman”, which CBS says he also executive-produced. Cannon’s been featured in several roles on TV, including at Nickelodeon (“All That”) and MTV (“Nick Cannon Presents Wild N Out”). As a musician, he’s performed with Kanye West, Mary J. Blige and others, including on his own 2003 album. Cannon takes over the radio morning show on January 19. CBS describes it as “a mix of the most popular music, celebrity interviews, and pop culture and lifestyle discussions.” The New York Board of Radio-Info quickly started talking about Cannon and “Now”.

Did his 'Last Call' show on NBC get canned?
He's still plans on doing both...any truth to this rumor about Brian McKnight doing late nights/weekends on AMP?

Who knows now... given that both Conan and Jimmy may be pushed back half an hour b/c of the Jay Leno fiasco. I'd find it hard to believe that Carson would WANT to have the show air at 2:05AM EST at this point.

I just listened to podcasts of Nick Cannon's 92.3 NOW show (I was too late to listen to it live), it sounds a lot like Carson's show on AMP. Both are pretty good shows actually.
