YATES COMMUNICATIONS TO LAUNCH AMERICA’S FIRST TRUE "GREEN" RADIO STATION
“Eco-Friendly” News and Talk Programming to Include Veteran Texas Radio Talent Kevin McCarthy

CORSICANA, Texas—March 28, 2008—Yates Communications received approval this week from the Federal Communications Commission to purchase radio station KAND-AM, Corsicana, Texas, and announced that they will use the platform to create the nation’s first true “green” radio station.

The owner will operate the radio station both locally over the airwaves and globally on GreenRadio.net as an internet broadcast operation. Yates Communications is scheduled to close on KAND-AM in mid-May and plans to launch the new format on June 1st.

"We‘ve produced weekend syndicated earth-friendly radio content for some time. The programming ran locally in Texas' largest cities, including Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston/Galveston,” says Yates Communications president, David Yates. “We wanted to expand our reach, but were not able find a station interested in weekday programming that encourages listeners to live a more healthy life, save money, and save the planet. We decided to do it on our own" he continued.

"No one has stepped into this void, either from a programming standpoint or a technology standpoint," Mr. Yates says. "Less than one-half of terrestrial radio stations offer an internet stream of their programming, and those that do would rather not because of the impact internet listeners have on their ratings. No one is programming a radio station designed from the ground-up to be broadcast to the entire country, to be delivered over the internet, with all of the resources of a 72 year-old heritage terrestrial radio station - except us."

"We're very pleased with the service of KAND's employees and are eager to have them join us," Mr. Yates said.

Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee Kevin McCarthy will be hosting 'The Kevin McCarthy Show on Green Radio' from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, weekdays.

"In Boy Scouts they taught us to always leave the campsite in better condition than we found it. I'm really excited about doing this new form of ‘radio’ with a great group of talented people who believe in working to make the world a better place and having fun doing it!" exclaimed Mr. McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy has been a radio and television personality in north Texas since 1972. He spent 14 years as a top-rated talk show host on KLIF. McCarthy was a charter inductee into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2002, a five–time winner of the Dallas Press Club's "Katy" award for "Best Talk Show in Texas," and the 1995 American Women in Radio & Television's Dallas-Fort Worth "Radio Personality of the Year." He was the Reunion Arena Voice of the Dallas Mavericks for 20 years.

The company is conducting a nation-wide talent search to fill their remaining on-air news and talk host positions. The station will carry programs produced by Sierra Club Radio and The National Geographic.

KAND-AM, which is located just south of Dallas, will operate using renewable energy to power its transmitter, studios, and offices. This will contribute to lowering the threat of global warming through the purchase of electricity generated by renewable energy sources. The station will purchase carbon offset certificates for its fleet of automobiles and will purchase eco-friendly station vehicles in the future.

"In 1936, one year before KAND began broadcasting, the State of Texas erected a marker in Corsicana naming the town 'The Birthplace of the Petroleum Industry,' Mr. Yates said, "Mobil and Texaco both trace their roots to the town. We can't think of a better place to usher in the next generation of energy to America than Corsicana."

They should counterbalance the "tree-hugging" talk in the mornings with "Gold on Green 1340" in the afternoons... ;D

There won't be much tree hugging going on, though. We'll be talking about how to live a better life, for less money. Saving money on gas, on electricity, etc. We're not going to approach this from neither a "Fox News" approach nor an "Air America" slant. If you believe in global warming, great! If you don't, we'll still be entertaining and informative as we explore a better way to live. GreenRadio.net will be all green all day, delivered via the internet. KAND will still be live and local with an expanded staff and expanded local programming. The new talk format will replace the country music.

Conservatives used to be all about "conservation," and now liberals own this issue. Why?

Now this is pretty dang cool. It'll be good to hear Kev Mac back on the air again with his own show. Also a decent concept to convert the station to a totally green business. I have a feeling the Big Boys may keep an eye on this station

To find out more, or to join the fun, go to our website: http://www.greenradio.net
We'll be launching a local station site for KAND soon, GreenRadio.net will serve the national audience that listen online.

Ya know, I was reading in Radio World just recently about "Green 960AM" in San Francisco. Glad to see a fresh idea for radio out there, and great to see KAND in the hands of a former employee who will invest the time and money to do it right AND honor the heritage of the frequency!

(Suppose Wolf Brand will make up a batch of GREEN Chili for station giveaways? [only oldtimers and Corsicana residents will get this reference...hee hee])

Way to go, David! Good luck! (and remember that "The Hi-Fi Club" is always in search of new affiliates...;D )

It's been over twenty years since Wolf Brand pulled out of Corsicana. There are now people living in Corsicana that are surprised to learn that Wolf Brand was started there. ???

Don't some of the world's most delicious fruitcakes (the edible kind--not the slang term for whacko people) come from Corsicana?

I hadn't thought of green chili - we'll steal that idea right away. Green960 in SF and The Globe in DC both have taken a step in the right direction, but are liberal talk and rock...

With regard to the Hi-Fi Club, be careful what you ask for. You don't fall into the category but there is no farm league for D/FW talk hosts anymore, and the nighttime hours would be a great time to let someone get the experience. We'll be trying some new things. KAND and GreenRadio.net will almost be 2 separate stations with GreenRadio.net acting as the network producing national shows that are green-themed and broadcast over the net station (and syndicated??), and KAND breaking away from the green programming for local news, sports, etc.

sadly i dont see this lasting long....
I like the faint Country lol :p

But a "Hippie" Station.. i just dont see it lasting...
Its like having Neil Sperry 24/7.. hes good for a few hours.. not all day.
So id Suggest maybe Oldies inbetween?
We have no Oldies anymore... could make a great niche

Liberty, a hippie station we won't be, I assure you. If you think gas is too expensive and if you think electricity is too expensive, then we'll have something for you.

Saving money and making the place around us better doesn't have to mean hippie: (http://www.foxnews.com/fncimag/gogreen/index.html).

"Don't mess with Texas" is about as green as you can get!

I do agree that too much of a good thing is too much... most of our shows will last no more than 2 hours... the "best of" everyday. Also, please keep in mind that we're going after the best talent we can find in America. We're programming this as a national station delivered over the internet, with the resources of a terrestrial station. Don't underestimate the value of the talent we will have on the channel.

With Chrysler and BMW announcing in-car wifi, internet radio is only going to grow, and there are already 30+ million listeners now.

Well, anything is better than country, I wish you a lot of luck. I just hope it doesn't degenerate into a 24/7 infomercial for Kyoto, based on Al Gore's junk science. I really don't want to pay $18 a gallon for gas for the privelege of buying energy use credits from some third world nation.

And yes, wi-fi streaming is the future of radio - at least you can keep metroplex listeners at night over the internet when skywave turns 1340 into a jumble.

Innovative concept, and It's encouraging. I just hope the lure of informercials muck up your intentions.

HA!!! Someone working for the state responsible for that marker must have been from Corsicana.....Excuse me, but they obviously never heard of SPINDLETOP.....Beaumont was the birthplace of the oil industry in Texas...and Sour Lake, just west of Beaumont, was the home of the Texas Co, the original name of Texaco.....Gulf Oil (Chevron), Magnolia (now Mobil) and others all started in Beaumont...in fact, Magnolia started one of the oldest AM in the state...KFDM, now KLVI in the 1920s!

KFDM stood for Kall For Dependable Magnolia......later, same calls ended up on TV6 when it was built (owned by the same owners, not Magnolia/Mobil, at the time)...TV and radio went their separate ways in early 1960s when John Hicks, father of Steve and Tom Hicks, bought 560 and changed callsign to KLVI. The KFDM calls still stand on TV6 (which was owned by BELO for a good while in the late 60s-mid 80s iirc and now, ironically, owned by FREEDOM.....FDM?? HMMM weird)...

Yep, that state marker (and Mr Yates as well) is VERY wrong !!!

April Fools Joke?

Why do I think I smell an April Fool's joke coming? A liberal/libertarian "earth-friendly" live and local talk station trying to launch out of a small AM graveyard frequency?

I may be wrong here, but if this is truly a joke/stunt, consider yourself called out.

Whoa...I think David Yates is quite sincere (besides, April Fools is still two days away at this writing.) Much like the often-lamented "Merge 93.3," it sounds like he plans to push the internet streaming harder than he will push the terrestrial station itself...and really, that's probably the best thing one could do with an AM. That concept has also worked pretty well for BizRadio...like the upper-echelon listener Biz goes after is going to pick up a clear AM signal in an office building--yeah, right. Biz gets a very nice response to their streaming, and that's more of the sales pitch they woo clients with, instead of non-existent Arb numbers.

For KAND, it will take a strong dose of MARKETING and getting very creative with it. I know from figures someone posted here from the FCC filings, David is getting the station for a song...and that leaves plenty of working capital to promote the thing, hire the right talent, and make a REAL go of it. Maybe this market's been tempered by the likes of Dave Schum and the 990 failure, but that's a case of a guy who spent his entire wad before the station even signed on the air. David's a real radio guy, he's worked it from both ends, and has a solid reputation with his long-running radio show.

Liberal and Libertarian are exchangeable terms? Scott Crowder could sure give you an earful over that!!

On the other post, it's likely more of a coincidence getting those KFDM calls, and finding a "backronym" to fit the letters. Most stations in TX who were assigned calls in the 1920s got "KF**" (hence KFJZ, KFRO, KFFZ, KFQB, KFOP, KFPM and KFLC, which were all assigned to north TX stations then. Lots of three-letter KF*'s were assigned to the west coast...and I'm sure there's more to these patterns, but I've never done deep research on it.)

I guess i missed the point :p
Sorry KAND..
This might work after all..
JUST KEEP IT UP...

If it is indeed Libral thoughh....
It'll prolly die but meh

Gladd someones gunna turn KAND into somthing :)

It goes back to the idea that good talk works while bad talk doesn't. Viewpoint is irrelevant. The second and third most listened to talk programs (behind Rush Limbaugh) are Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Both have a definite liberal viewpoint. If KAND provides a quality product that is also entertaining to enough people, it will do just fine. If it doesn't, it's doomed. It's really that simple.
