Kane Leaving FLZ!

Well, sort of...

He's leaving Tampa Bay to take over a morning gig in a Top 25 market. However, he'll still be doing the afternoon shift at WFLZ from out of town, with phone lines and everything. PD duties are being relinquished.

A couple of things...wow, that's pretty big news for Kane and FLZ...

1) How does this affect FLZ? Their afternoon guy being piped in from out of town? I guess it's not VT'ed, and Hamand says he'll be coming in for events and what not, but still...will it work? I say as long as the content/quality of the show stays consistent, it should be fine. Most listeners won't even know the difference.

2) Where is Kane going? Top 25 mornings, within the company... I've narrowed it down to four within the CHR format: KKRZ/Portland, WAKS/Cleveland, KSLZ/St. Louis, WHYI/Miami.

3) Who takes over as PD? You can bet they'll be getting applications out the you-know-what.

But he will also probably conduct contest like he has done here in Tampa when giving away an X box in which he ask female callers to dial in to give their best impression of oral sex over the phone. The first caller I heard sounded like a 14 year old. So what ever city he is going to LOCK your 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16 year old daughters up.

MJ is pulling the same crap with the Holiday Hooters contest. On monday they pulled a story off the wire concerning how many parteners did you have sex with before marriage. The first caller was a 19 years old who said she had sex with 8 guys. MJ then asked how many did you actually have sex with, she responds by saying 80. MJ next asked how old were you, she says 14. Wow here we have Queer Channel and there so called talent pumping the minds of your young daughters on what they think your daughter should know about sex.

Oh by the way with their Holiday Hooters contest basically they are telling your young ones that it's ok for an 8 year old or a 14 year old girl to think about having big boobs when they turn 18.

This is why I am in Radio to pound such non sense into the ground.

Mr Music Man would be wrong on his speculation... it's HOT 99-5 where Kane will end up with his old buddy Kapugi. Kane is off to the major leagues. (Washington DC) Hope he's smart enought to get a long term no cut deal under his belt before he bolts!

Wow!! Someones bitter eh? I worked with Kane back in my intern days (1997-1999) @ FLZ. I learned almost everything Ive know about radio from him and a few others. And I think he did a great job being I worked in some major markets, and now in a top 35 market.....theres a reason KANE is so successful. And isn't from ******bag radio wannabe's like yourself bro ;) Yes, I am a self proclaimed Kane "nutswinger". Good job kane!!

PS: Bill..I listened to your airchecks. Ummm...yea..you do the news. There's no personality needed. So I can see your misunderstanding and ignorance about bits and such. It's not your fault.
 
First off, Kane is getting mornings at Hot 99.5. I used to say that if you were "friends" with Mason Dixon, you always had a gig wherever he worked. I'm beginning to think the same thing with Jeff Kapugi. He pulled Kane back to FLZ from XM and now Kane follows him back north to DC. I can't quote names off hand but I know for a fact Kapugi has a circle of talent he'll use wherever he goes. This includes off-air staff as well. Seriously, how long before he gets a chance to work MJ/Schnitt into one of the Clear Channel AMs or talk stations in DC and beyond. The CC studios in Tampa Bay sure have lost a number of prominate names the last few months. Who's next?
 
What happens to his Open House Part gig now? Doesn't that originate from FLZ? Is he really going to be flying between DC and Tampa?

Likely nothing--it'll just originate from Washington. Interesting to see if FLZ will keep OHP after Kane does leave, for I think that was the only reason it aired down here.
 
With Kane leaving FLZ... FLZ is really going to be hurting.. MJ is good, to a point, but Kane carried them sort of.. Their playlist is entirely too narrow, I've listened for an extended period twice and constantly hear songs over and over and over, its annoying. The jocks sound like they are just controlled by the music. Its like if 2 people call in and request London Bridges by Fergie.. they'll play it twice. Its weird.. No repeats within certain time blocks would make the station better.
 
Kane's show will still be on. He will be doing his show LIVE from his home studio, with all FLZ lines forwarded to his house during his shift. The station is doing great!

you were kidding right? :eek: WFLZ is a CHR not a Classic Rock station. Repeating the hits is what they do.
 
In the spring book flz was #1 25-54, for a chr that is amazing. Does anyone know if they still were #1 in the summer book? I know that if a country station beat them it doesn't matter since flz has the listeners with money but if you know please post it.
 
I'm from Boston,obviously a bigger market than Tampa but when I listened to FLZ, it just seemed they weren't playing the hits, they were playing songs that used to be hits and I noticed that switching between WXKS/Kiss 108 here in Boston and FLZ in Tampa. I had no clue they were doing that well, I found the repeating of certain songs to be a little too much for the listener.
 
Hey, Bostonmusic, just wondering, have you listened at length to any of the other stations in the Tampa Market? I think that the lack of playlist variety in those stations play some factor as to why FLZ does so well.
 
I listened to Star 95.7, though not the same format, they play some of the same music. I thought they sounded fresher and had better variety, yes thats what the station is branded for. But I felt 93.3 wasn't giving enough airplay to other songs that were popular at the time I listened in. In comparison, Kiss here in Boston was playing songs with frequency that FLZ was barely playing because they were overplaying other songs, Can I remember dates and titles of the songs, No. I didn't know FLZ was doing that well ratings wise though. Fair play to them, not my type of CHR though.

Their most-played hits only receive between 70 and 80 spins per week. Compare that to the 110 to as many as 130 spins per week that other comparative Clear Channel TOP 40 stations play for their biggest hits.

It's no wonder that whenever a new poll / survey goes up on the CHR-POP message board regarding favourite stations 93.3-FLZ keeps appearing on those submitted posts over and over again.

There's a good reason why 93.3-FLZ is the most-listened-to TOP 40 station in the entire state of Florida as well as one of the most-listened-to in the southeastern U.S. !

As always Major, you bring up excellent points. If it's a very successful station, then the management must be doing something right!

Was it you who predicted that Kane might move to WHYI in Miami or someone else?
 
I'm listening to FLZ online right now and it seems like they are playing quite a few non-current hits.

During the time I was listening, I heard "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit, which is from the late 1990s and then I heard 3 Doors Down "Let Me Go", which no longer a current.

I like it when CHR stations do this, because it opens up the playlist, the station sounds fresher, and it sounds less repetitive.

NO - That was not me. I thought that it was actually rather amusing when someone [on another board] suggested that Kane was headed to Y-100 to take over the morning show from Elvis Duran and his crew.

When I first read in FMQB that Kane was leaving 'FLZ' to head to a TOP 15 or 20 radio market the first station that I thought of was 'HOT-99.5' in D.C. because I know that they are in the midst of making MASSIVE changes to their programming lineup to position themselves to be even more successful than they have been recently. Truth be told they are already the most successful (highest-rated) TOP 40 station in the D.C. area in about 20 years ! I think that Kane should push them even closer to the top of the ratings heap !


THE MAJOR
 
As much as I also want to defend WFLZ, Major, they are such a disappointment compared to their glory days as the Power Pig. Back in the early to mid-1990s, WFLZ was the best CHR in the United States. Sure they were raunchy, but that was part of their appeal. Moreover, as the Power Pig, they had the most ridiculous amount of variety I have ever heard on a CHR. Bubba the Love Sponge used to play AC/DC!

For best CHR in the country right now...I'd have to go with Mobile's WABB, which can be heard pretty far east into Florida...
 
Bubba didn't play ACDC, he used a loop of the begining of back in black as a talkover bed.
