KANM

KANM (Gallup) is a repeater for KANW-HD2 in Albuquerque. I didn't hear it at all in Rio Rancho. But I believe that I am hearing it on the north side of the Nob Hill neighborhood of Albuquerque. Both my Tecsun PL-310ETs and my Sangean HDR-14 are picking it up. I first thought this was some sort of translator. The audio has substantial digital compression artifacts, and trails the audio on KANW-HD2 by a couple of minutes. It seemed very bizarre to me, but now I believe it's KANM. KANM qualifies as a class C2 station, but it also seems odd to me that it manages to make it in here all the way from Gallup. It is in mono, so that does keep the noise level down. Has anyone else (reading here from Albuquerque) experienced this phenomenon?

KANM is probably fed with a webstream which would account for the delay.

And its almost 3000 feet up, it would be no surprise it could make it quite for.. height wins in FM transmission.

KANM height above ground level is 3360m. Nob Hill elevations run around 1600m so, yes, there's a definite height differential. Still, we're talking about distances of around 130-140 miles so I'm still finding this to be surprising.

KANM is out of Grants not Gallup. It broadcasts at 1000 watts from Mount Taylor (Approx. 11,000 ft) about 56 miles west of downtown Albuquerque. The other stations from that site are a K-Love station at 89.5 (110 watts), KDSK 92.7 which is also on the 92.9 translator and KSFE 96.7 EDM "Pirate Radio" both at 265 watts. There is also KOTY 88.7 but I often pick up KXNM out of Encino which used to have its own format until last summer when it has since become a satellite of KANW. KEZF at 91.1 also used to broadcast from there but now has a CP to move to a site to the west of Grants at 92kW. If I pick up anything on 91.1 it is usually the Santa Fe translator for KANW-2. What I have noticed about the Mt. Taylor stations since 96.7 has been a favorite of mine since the format began early last year, is that the signal drops out below the escarpment on the west side to about I-25 and then they can be heard better east of there likely due to elevations. I've heard 96.7 come in well all the way out to Tijeras in mountains and even still being able to hear it somewhat near Edgewood. Those stations can also come in better west of the petroglyphs. I don't know how far west those signals go, but Gallup has KNIZ on 90.1. There is also a translator on 96.7 from Window Rock so there could be some interference if it is in fact possible for those signals to be heard that far out.

Thanks for the correction. I'll claim that my fingers have a mind of their own.

Seriously - I'm amazed that anything outside Albuquerque gets through because the dial is so crowded. It's a big difference from 40+ years ago when the only thing between 100.3 and the upper end of the FM dial was KFMG (now KBQI)!

I didn't come here to DX, but if the opportunity presents itself....

By the way, I just tried for KSFE and got it! In mono, and the antenna has to be just right, but it's there.
Not sure what the audience for the thing is, though. I don't see Grants as being the rave capital of New Mexico.
