Kansas radio sucks....

It's true. 12 Country stations in one area? Come on. There has to be better choices than this. Alternative, Modern AC, AAA, Hard Rock, Comedy, Smooth Jazz, Urban, Rhythmic AC, Rhythmic CHR, 80s/90s Hits...formats that are desperately needed in this state. If you don't want people to listen to stations outside of Kansas, maybe create something that doesn't cater towards every cowboy and old person in this state.

A very wise station manager / sales manager once told me a town (county, area, what ever geographical unit you what to use) will only get the programming that the sponsors will support. If your station is billing enough playing country then why change?

BTW I have worked AC, Country, Oldies, and even some Head Banging Rock. I have sold AC and Country. Country was the easiest sell.

Wichita had a few stations in the past but like secondchoice mention its all about the sales

KSJM 107.9 was Urban but Sherman sold half of it to Carter Broadcasting KC. That lasted a few years and now its country
KMXW 92.3 was Rhythmic AC for a few years but the playlist got very bland now its country
KANR 92.7 was Alternative but now spanish
KWSJ 98.7 was Smooth Jazz but Entercom wanted its Talk/ Sports KFH-AM on FM

It's Kansas the middle of nowhere

One thing all four of those stations had in common was they had signal issues.

107.9 is Licensed to Winfield, and can't boost it's signal over Wichita much beyond what it has because of the 107.9 in Great Bend.
92.3 (Licensed to and transmitting from Newton) and 92.7 (Belle Plaine License) limit each other. I will note though KANR is reported to be in the process of moving to 99.7 with the current frequency to be taken by KWME in Wellington. (This will get KANR away from a co-channel in the Salina area to just a 1st adjacent.) Of the four frequencies, 92.3 has the best ability to cover Wichita.
98.7 (Clearwater License) is limited by the K-Love station on 99.1.
