Signs on the air in Hutchinson!

Cliff Shank announced KNZS-100.3 FM has signed on the air. “Hutchinson and central Kansas now have a local Classic Rock FM station to listen to. KNZS or Kansas Rocks signed on at midnight. Kansas Rocks will be true to its name. The format is the heart of Classic Rock radio format with a strong appeal to men 30 to 59 years old .”

Kansas Rocks music spans four decades of music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. The Classic Rock format features all the artists you expect: The Beatles and the Rolling Stones from the 60’s; Led Zeppelin, The Who, Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd from the 70’s; Van Halen, Aerosmith and Pink Floyd from the 80’s; and finally, we select 90’s title from heritage artists that fit such as Tom Petty and Eric Clapton.

100.3 FM - KNZS has studios in downtown Hutchinson and is licensed to Arlington, Kansas. Ad Astra per Aspera Broadcasting acquired the station in December of 2007 from Connoisseur Media of Wichita and immediately filed applications with the F.C.C. and the F.A.A. to increase the power from 7,800 watts to 14,500 watts and build the new 488 foot tower south of Plevna., the old tower was located southwest of Kingman. The upgrade more than quadruples the potential listening audience. Ad Astra per Aspera Broadcasting also owns Hit Radio 94.7 FM - KSKU ... Nice one, Cliff. Model it after Wichita's Fox, a great station now just ok because they lost a great PD and have lousy jocks on now( excluding Jan).

So its now four months later... Did this station ever get up and running???? Is it staffed with local jocks and stuff, or is it just automated.. Im hoping it has some local Talent?? Also,, I come through Kansas about twice a year along I-70,,, but im not too familier with the towns you mentioned, will this be something I can pick up along I-70???? Anyway,,, no offense to you all, but I find radio along the I-70 stretch in Kansas to be extremely boring.... The only station in Kansas that I truly enjoy is Power Hits 97.5 in Junction City,, but after that I find myself usually listening to Boring Automated or Satellite AC stations,,, or Country,,, or if coming through at night I DX on the AM band,,,, but Although I like to DX distant AM stations, its much more for the thrill of receiving distant signals than the boring Talk Programs..

Anyway,,, Im sorry to run so far off topic on a soap box,, But I think Kansas could use more Rock and CHR Top 40 stations.... What are all the kids and also older Male's that still like to Rock, or enjoy todays CHR music supposed to listen too?????

Shank's stations are located in and around Hutchinson. I know you used to be able to hear KXKU 106.1 and KSKU 97.1, which has sinced moved to Wichita, in Salina on a good car radio/home stereo. I also think I've received the old KGGG 94.7 (now KSKU) in Salina. I'm not sure how well they would do on a lesser radio, but I think you could probably get 106.1 decently.

I doubt you'd be able to get KNZS 100.3 along the I-70 run. It's further south of Hutchinson than the other stations. I'm not sure how well KWHK 95.9 would do either. It's a fairly new stick, too.

When it comes to radio along I-70 in Kansas, I tend to agree with you that much of it is boring, especially past Topeka. KJCK was a pretty good station, and most of the Seaton Stations out of Manhattan, like KMKF 101.5, KXBZ 104.7 and KACZ 96.3, aren't bad either. If you like country, KYEZ out of Salina has always been a good product, and it used to be live/local pretty much all-the-time, though that may no longer be the case. KJLS 103.3 out of Hays used to be a decent hot AC for the market size, and, again, it used to be live/local most all-the-time. However, McRadio sold it to Eagle a few years ago. So, that, too, may no longer be true. I also thought KFNF 101.1 out of Oberlin was a decent classic country station that could take you at least to Colby, but it won't do much for you if you don't like country. At least in the car, I usually could start getting a few Denver and/or Colorado Springs stations by Goodland.

I really enjoy Kjck Junction City Manhatten,, and ive even managed to pick up Power 93,9 Witchita which I thought was weird,, it was fuzzy but listenable... I remember Mix 103.3 in Hayes,, it was great back in the 90s,,, very CHR leaned Hot AC,, and I remember a 102.5 in Goodland Kansas that I must have been able to pick up a good 200 miles away.. And in Colby Kansas,, they have KQ-100,, I think its off the bird,, but it is the only station resembling a CHR in the area...

And yeah,, as soon as I hit the Colorado-Kansas state line I can get 98.9 KKMG Colorado Springs,, but very fuzzy until you get to Lima CO,, I can also get 99.9 KVUU which fights with another station in Great Bend I think.... Also,, around the state line I can get 98.5 KYGO, 96.5 KXPK,, but the other Denver stations I cant really get till around Lima CO,, except I have heard KQKS 107.5 near Burlington CO near the KA state line.

I was with "Mix 103FM" (KJLS) back in the late 1990s. We had a great staff, awesome facilities (fully digital from the board to the transmitter), and a full Class C signal that reached nearly 100 miles in all directions. It was a fun place to do radio.

KKCI-102.5-Goodland transmits from the KLOE-TV tower near Brewster, KS. They're up around 700 feet and also have great coverage. However, their signal is now limited to the southeast by co-channel KKCV, transmitting from near Kinsley, KS.

The 99.9 that fights with KVUU in northwestern Kansas is KWKR-Leoti. I also worked *there* from 1984-86. Back when it was a live and local CHR. Unfortunately, today it is 100% satellite-fed, relaying a Classic Rock format.

Yeah I remember hearing Mix 103.3 while driving to denver..... What a Flame thrower,,, it had a great mix of todays hits with little to no rap,,,, you also played some Dance Music as well, and even some 80s and 70s tunes in moderation... Didnt Power hits 97.5 used to be on 94.5,,,, first called Power 94.5, and then changed its name to The Big Cat 94.5???? How did 94.5 end up becoming a Topeka station... Power Hits 97.5 and KQ 100 are both flame throwers too,,, or at least they were back then.

Yes, KJCK-FM was "Power 94.5" and later "Big Kat 94.5." It was moved as part of a massive realignment of stations (I believe a total of 16) to get 97.3, which is now KLRX, moved into Kansas City. KCSX 97.3 was a satellite country station out of Moberly known as "Kicks 97.3." I believe it was a C2 or C3. It moved from Moberly to Lees Summit as a class C1 and kept the 97.3 frequency. WIBW-FM was also on 97.3. So, it had to be moved, and it got 94.5. That required KJCK-FM to go from 94.5 to 97.5.

I believe other stations that got moved include KRLI in Malta Bend (from 97.5 to 103.9), KCHI Chillicothe (from 103.9 to 98.5), and KAYQ Warsaw from 97.7 to 97.1. That, however, isn't the total list.

You can pick up Hit radio, 94.7 FM - KSKU from Hays to Abilene along I-70, for a 50,000 watt station the coverage is impressive in central Kansas. Along I-70 KXKU-106.1 Kicks Country can be heard from about Russell to Junction City. Kansas Rocks went on the air in August. Along U.S. 50 KNZS-100.3 can be heard from about Kinsley to Newton, and from Pratt to Lindsborg. Ironically Kansas Rocks is very similar to the Zuh in Salina, that no longer exists as an over-the air station. People in Hutchinson and central Kansas really like the new Kansas Rock's format.

When KJCK Power hits 97.5 was on 94.5 I could pick it up in Kansas City,,, not with a strong signal but it was disernable, One time I heard the old power 94.5 about 60 miles east of KC into Missourie, this was in the mid 90s though... I assume their DX isnt as good since 97.3 in KC,,, but I bet Power hits 97.5 now has a clearer signal in Topeka where I used to get some Far Off classic rock station on 94.5 bleeding into it,, I assume that station had to move too.
