Kanye West on Star 94

I heard Kanye West's Stronger today on Star 94 in midday. I like the song but had never heard it on Star before. Not that it's offensive in the least; it's just a little more in the direction of rap that Star avoids.

I was especially surprised to hear it in midday. Hearing it at night wouldn't have surprised me that much.

Have they been playing it (and I've just been missing it)? Or, are they trying to compete more against Q100 musically? If they're trying to go younger, they ought to think about that afternoon drive show.

They probably played it at night at some point, but I doubt it played in midday until recently.

Star 94 is reacting to competition, and competition in the worst form: As a proven, successful brand that was just given a blowtorch signal. Gary and Rob made it pretty clear that they want to finish the job on Star. Can't wait to see what Q100 does to be very visible this summer. I'm betting they'll be everywhere.

Cindy and Ray. For those of us who like to take a nap on the way home. :)

That's interesting...but hasn't that song peaked? They're increasing airplay after it peaked.

What's the philosophy? Now that it's been around so long and people have accepted it, they can play it?

They also play/have played Usher, Timbaland, Rihanna and NeYo, Cascada et al. I don't get the big deal. They seem to hold off these artists until they become more mass appeal, as they've always done. They now play Kanye when you would have to say he's become more mass appeal. (See the Grammys?) Nothing drastic here.

Did you guys know that in the spring of 1999, the #1 song in the USA was "Genie In A Bottle" by Christina Aguilera, and Star 94 had never played it once? In fact, I bought the single after hearing the song at a Sam Goody in Myrtle Beach.

"Today's Most Conservative Mix of Old, Edited Hit Music. Star 94!"

I don't know what you're talking about. I think those guys have great chemistry going on...they genuinely seem to be having a good time and seem to like each other, and that's something sorely lacking elsewhere. I was always taught that that translates to the listener...if the person/people on the radio aren't having fun, neither is the listener.

Good radio doesn't necessarily mean playing rap or slapping female behinds with cold cuts. ;D

Star 94 is SCREWED.

You have two established morning shows to deal with. The Bert Show on Q100, and your old morning show Steve and Vikki on B98.5 starting in July.

Q100 is a panel reporter to Billboard's Top 40 panel, Star 94 is not. As a result, the labels will get closer to Q100, even more now that they are on a 100kW stick. The reason Star had been able to do what they have done is that they were the only 100kW game in town. If you were promoting a single, who would you rather go to. Would you rather go to a station that truly plays "All The Hits" and reports to the big kahuna of charts that matters in the music world, or one that is late to the game, doesn't play hip-hop, and edits out even the slightest reference to drugs. You would pick Q100, hands down.

Star has to play hip-hop or else. They need to get rid of Cindy and Ray, or Star's demise is eminent. Now that Q100 is on equal par, Star is dead. Lincoln needs to flip formats now (or sometime before they put the station up for sale).

Mark Kanov wanted to retire with The Morning Mess as his legacy. Instead, it seems like he is going to retire with dust from the backfiring muffler (metaphorically)...and it will not be his fault. They have everything going against them (Q100, aborted sale, morning show)

By looking at the top songs that Star 94 plays it looks like a Hot AC.

So Star needs add songs like:
Buy U A Drink
Low
Good Life
etc...

I think Cindy and Ray would be just fine on a talk station, not a CHR.

Although, I wouldn't mind getting out the bologna for Cindy, that's for sure. :)

How can a station appeal to the young-and-stupid demo without playing ANY rap?

So Star 94 doesn't want anybody over 40 ... especially females ... and anybody under 25 because they won't play anything on the current Hot R & B (Low, 50 Cent, etc.)

The station had an unusual staff meeting on Thursday - anybody hear what happened?

I agree on the Cindy cold cuts.

Also I listened for about a minte the other dayand Cindty wass talking about her horrible divorce. Is that new revelation on the show?

Cindy , of Ray and Cindy on STAR, owns a weiner dog........
I can't help but like any woman who owns a weiner dog.
Which female radio personalities own cats?
Sweet Baby Jane, on DAVE, owns cats.(Do kittens count? Yes....because they turn into cats.) She actually sounds like a dog-girl.....that's the cruel part....she's really, in secret, a cat-woman.
Shannon, on STAR, just has to be a cat woman....(Marc too.)
Vicky, of Steve and Vicky, is obviously a cat woman. Possibly owns an old, fat dog for the cats to scratch and torture when they get bored....
Dallas, at WYAY, just has to be a dog woman. Please don't spoil it for me if she's not.......
All sensitive male hosts, like Bert, Steve McCoy, et al are cat dominated she-males.
I'll bet Kayne is a cat-boy too. Nudge Nudge Wink Wink.....
