Being from Philadelphia, when I was in the Army in 1970, I did basic training at good old Fort Polk, if it were not for KAOK and KLOU I would of went mad....They were 2 top 40 stations from Lake Charles, they did make it up to the Leesville area during the day. I also remember KLOU broadcasting live from the beach. I have not been to that area since 1970, are these two stations still in existance? Also, there was one Country station from Leesville, KLEE that played Classic Country, does that still exist, just curious. KEEL-71 was the station that would make it all the way down to Polk from Shreveport, that was the most popular, being heard all over the Camp. FM was not even considered back then.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for but:

Do you happen to have some sort of frequencies or an idea of where they were on the dial perhaps?

I know KEEL 710 is now a clear channel news talker in Shreveport still running 50kw days.

KLOU became cumulus media's KXZZ 1580 (the record I have shows that callsign attached to this station in the early 80's) and last I know it's a gospel station
KAOK is a news talker on 1400

There is a station now on 1570am in Leesville (only one listed in the parish on am) so I don't know if it changed frequency or not but if you can give me some idea, I can try to search for the Leesville station KLEE but can make no guarantees as KLEE has been according to my research on a Iowa station since at least 1980?!?!.

Thanks for the info, 1580 and 1400 were the frequencies of KLOU and KAOK back in 1970, I know KAOK at 1400 was a bit stronger than KLOU, at night they were unlistenable. I made a mistake with the Leesville station, it was KLLA and signed on when I was at Fort Polk around 1970 with Country Classics it was just a daytimer, very good programming.

Holly Beach, probably... or that makeshift beach on the north shore of Lake Charles with that lovely panoramic view of interstate and refineries. Mmmmm... Industry.

I believe the saying goes "Lake Charles, Home of the World's Most Beautiful Beaches."

The KLOU call letters now belong to an oldies station in St. LOUis.
 
Thats the one, there was a nice hotel called the Downtowner that overlooked the beach. I think it was route 80 that crossed over some channel with a high bridge. You could see the refineries and chem plants from the beach, besides that, they did a few nice remotes from there. The big hits in those days were Toast and Marmalade by Tin Tin/13 questions by Seatrain/One Toak over the line by Brewer and Shipley/Mr. Bogangels by the Dirt Band. All these songs received many requests at the remote. I wish I could remember the names of the jocks.

KLLA is oldies currently on 1570 24 hours

My question is how you heard 1580 with KLLA (unless they were on another frequency before the current 1570) or heard it before it signed on?(curious)

Also KLLA was country classics in 1970, or was it what would be considered contemporary country then (classic country now)?
