This AM station went silent approx 4 years ago. I have researched the history and have documented the time line regarding ownership, transfers of control, etc. Does anyone have memorabilia, air checks for KAPY or know where I may be able to find anything?

KAPY lives again in LPFM form, 100 screamin' stereo watts from Pt. Angeles. Website when it was up had some nice history, ownership, etc. Was up a few days ago but not now, I guess. Keep checking, anyway. Not sure if they are on the air yet- FCC authorization just came a week or so ago.

Pretty ironic how KAPY-AM was silenced. It was bought by Salem to prevent any interference to it's planned big, fat, hairy 50,000 watt KKOL signal on 1300 kHz. KKOL however was not allowed to transmit at that power (oil refineries and RF electricity don't mix) and probably never will.

However, 1290 kHz is still silent in Port Angeles.....Sad......

Hi Bill, I realize this thread is from 11 years ago. But I just joined radiodiscussions, so I'm chiming in now. I worked at KAPY in 1983 and 1984. Tom Newcomb was the owner, and a great mentor to me. He is now deceased, but I had a fond reunion dinner with him and his wife about 10 years ago. Others I worked with at KAPY included Bill Baker, Robin (Robinson) Hall, John Heikele, and Edward E. KAPY is alive and well in LP form since 2015, as Valley 104.9 "NW Eclectic Music". A music station that styles in much of the AAA heritage music of KZAM/KEZX/KMTT/KPIG along with todays new tracks from the Valley Fresh music file. It mixes in community Talk/News and Info evenings from 6-7PM and all day Sunday after 10AM. Thanks for sharing the KAPY call letter history. How ironic, we even have Al Stewarts, End of the Day on the playlist.

It's been a very long time since I've seen that name here. I'll have to listen in. Is it more of the Dave Matthews/Amy Winehouse/Weezer type that get airplay on KPND and KBCO? Or is it more of the singer-songwriter type - Carole King, Carly Simon, Donald Fagen, Paul McCartney? How far does KAPY-LP get out before KTDD Eatonville's worship music takes it out?
 
Wow, @scott salvatori! It's nice to see that the call letters have made a resurgence. Thanks for letting us know. I'm listening to 104.9 now. I was a big fan of KEZX, and I knew some of the major players at KPIG (including the late Laura Hopper). I'm looking forward to spending listening time with KAPY in the 21st Century.
 
What was the time frame of Chuck Herring's ownership of KAPY?
 
Regarding Valley 104.9/KAPY. The station transmission from Duvall gets out to I-90 between Preston and the Snoqualmie casino exit and a bit further down HWY 18. With all the hills and mountains, we picket fence into various locations into North Bend and get into upper Snoqualmie Ridge pretty good. Some antenna location improvements are a strong possibility in 2021. The 1965+ playlist has a heavy dose of singer-songwriters, classic folk rock bands and deep tracks that are all but ignored by most commercial iheart AAA's today that play mostly current modern rock hits along with a few burnt out Dylan and Eagles hits. The KEZX/KMTT classic Gold, as I call it accounts for about 5% of the playlist. We do keep a good grip on quality modern rock tracks on playlistA and The Valley Fresh Music File, but filter out most of the loud noisy bands from the playlist. Along with that we mix in a strong dose of 70's style R&B/soul, and newer as well, with some classic top 40 hits, blues, local artists and contemporary bluegrass folk, and Americana here and there (along with a few clinkers) ha ha. You know everything that makes the AAA format mix sound great when programmed right. We have some of our live/recorded live/voice tracked hand crafted and specialty music shows from 7-9PM every night Mon thru Fri with a few open gaps as we look for knowledgeable and listenable music hosts all across the country.

Of course, Chuck (Charles) Herring was also the first major tv anchor at KING 5 in Seattle, circa 1950's, into the early 60's, but not sure on the exact dates. I think he was the anchor for the World's Fair, which would put him into 1962.

Roughly 1960 (when they started a newsroom) until 1967.
He was News Director too.
 
I don't think LBB was old enough to work for KING in ‘66. I worked for them from ‘79-‘82 but I was a young buck then. I actually had the opportunity to work in the old KING studio and transition to the brand new ultra modern studio and tv center in ‘80. You know, that ultra modern complex that was torn down 30 years later to make way for condos. (sigh).

One of the worst decisions ever made in Seattle TV history. KING's 1999 news set was state-of-the-art and worthy of praise. Then it got razed for condos, which are probably $2500 a month...

Thank you. I recall that Chuck was trying to sell KAPY, and he contacted me about buying it. That would've been after 1976, I was working at KMPS. I remember sitting in our living room in North Seattle when he called. I was impressed that a "famous" newscaster would call directly.

$3,000 per month for a studio when I looked into that particular area (though I'm not sure if it was technically the building that was razed on the old KING site).

Actually he wasn't THAT far off. Took a tour of KING in 1965 and decided right then and there I wanted to be in broadcasting.
BUT...I was in 4th grade so they weren't hiring "my kind".
