She is no longer listen on the website and All Access had an ad for B103 and the Long Island Radio Group for a full time announcer...

Been listening this week during mid day & I have to say it certainly is an improvement! Maybe someone read something here & is trying to improve the station. It certainly should sound a lot slicker than it has. Its not a money thing. Its a programmers thing.

Don't strain yourself trying to pat yourself on the back, Barry! It had nothing to do with the posts on this sight. According to Kara herself, "they (B-103) wanted to go in a different direction." Funny thing is, her mid-day #'s were the best on the station! If you think they should sound "slicker" (a point on which I wholeheartedly agree!), then I guess you're not a regular listener of the station. Nothing's changed...EVER! They lack identity. Instead of taking the reins and positioning themselves as the only oldies station left in the NYC/Metro listening area, they're basically an AC station that plays oldies--still rotating the same schlocky "fun hits of the 60's & 70's," just with a different vanilla jock. This is a personality driven format and it's listeners deserve to hear jocks that have a credible relationship to the music played, (i.e.: Bob Shannon, Bobby Jay) and not "liner card readers." I know the economics will never allow that to happen, but Barnstable has a bonafide "Oldies Jock" right under their noses..."Party Marty" Mitchell on K-Joy, currently doing the "K-Joy Saturday Night Dance Party and weekday fill-ins, who worked on B-103 back in the early days of the station, on WCBS-FM (as Marty Michaels) and currently on several Sirius Satellite oldies streams.

Not trying to pat myself on the back... and if the station had wanted to "go in a different direction" then clearly my observations were spot on. Party Marty was good on the station wayyyy back when. I also understand that B103 simply can not afford the likes of Bob Shannon, Bobby Jay, and any of the other old CBS-FM talent, as they can not be heard in NYC, parts of Nassau, Huntington, etc to make them a NY Metro Powerhouse Oldies station and generate the necessary money to pay those salaries. They're a local suburban station that has always had the mentality that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", which means "If the owners aren't bothering us, don't make waves." There is some good talent there already, and they have access to other local talent in the right price range, its a matter of hiring the right people and properly motivating them. The advertisers and the audience will respond.

I go back in B103's history to before they went on the air. I was their 1st advertiser to sign a contract (I called them when I figured out they were going to be an oldies station based on who I read they were hiring) AND mine was the 1st check they received after the spots ran. I WANT them to be successful. I like the music, and as a businessman here on L.I., we have very few choices in which to advertise. Programmers and Management at B103 in the past have been Lazy or Incompetent.

Radio Suits are killing their own stations. They are chasing their listeners to other sources of entertainment. That station just has to be made to sound better than it does now. There are smaller stations in worse locations both geographically and dial position doing a MUCH better job. Last week someone came to the defense of her "show" by saying she was a nice person... so she's a nice person. That didn't make her show anything to listen to. ..and thats all the audience can do with Radio. Listen, or Leave.

Maybe someone at Airport Plaza felt the same way deep inside... Maybe?

And as far as them saying they "wanted to go in a different direction"...that's not exactly a compliment. It just a "nice" way to fire someone. It doesn't exactly sound like they thought her show was so spectacular.

There's no doubt about that, but consultants like David Eduardo will continually say stations are programming towards the demos advertisers want. To me, it's like the tail wagging the dog. The fact that "oldies" stations have become an endangered species, is a result of that. What advertisers and market managers are failing to realize is that "50 ain't fatal!" There are advertising dollars to be made by the generation of baby boomers who are hitting retirement age. It'll take someone with vision and forsight to make the most of this "golden opportunity," but given the current trend, don't hold your breath.

But beyond that, like you stated, Radio itself refuses to understand they are chasing after a demographic that doesn't want them! The generation of listeners 18-24 have grown up with alternative means of entertainment (video, PC's, ipods, et al). Radio isn't their first, second or even third choice. Meanwhile, they're chasing away segment of the market that has always sought out radio as a primary or secondary source of information and entertainment. It's foolish and sad.
