Wanting Joe the Plumber dead is not the same as wanting to kill Joe the Plumber. Both statements are hideous even though I feel that Joe is a Media Whore that McCain is trying to use to his advantage.

It at the very minimum should be an indecency fine and if it were in any locality other than San Fran should be possible loss of license with a threat. The tone of his voice was very specific as a threat, as in I want that mother f##ker dead. Any word out of the station on the incident?

I agreed with karel last night. Joe the contractor is an idiot!

The board op, not Karel. It's clear that Karel knew his mic was live -- to his board op, that is. Given that Karel is in Long Beach they obviously keep the mic open to cue or audition during the breaks, as is the practice in doing any remote. I've listened to the clip. Karel was trying to impress his board op about how, oh, outraged he allegedly is about the Joe the Plumber story on ABC news.

Newsperson responds:

I worked news on those shifts with Karel at Metro and many times he would jump in with his opinon. The newsperson (especially from Metro) is there to support the talk personality and many of them enjoy to blah, blah about the news right on top of the newscast.

The personality at KGO seems to be able to drop in on any newscast as they desire. The producer and engineer at KGO probally did not think about cutting him off becasue it's part of his entertainment.

Does anyone know who doing the news from Metro at the time?

Karel's rant was on top of the network news, however.

But, back to the Metro/KGO host bantering. I'll bet it's embarrassing to many Metro folks to have to banter with a lame talkshow host or someone who does a lame or smarmy intro (such as John Rothmann). I cringe sometimes when I hear this strained attempt by a host to get cozy with the Metro person.

Doesn't matter. He was heard over the network newscast, and he was swearing.

According to laradio.com, Karel has been suspended for "an undisclosed period of time."

If confirmed, this is a gift to all of us. I hope it will be for a substantial period of time.

I once heard the late Pete Wilson slip out a few expletives during the network news. Clearly he was talking to the board op or screener, and didn't realize his mic was still on air rather than in cue. This is not the talent's fault unless he is running combo. Pete got back on the air and said nothing about it. Finally a listner alluded to the fact the "elephant was in the room" and Pete conceeded his unfortunate mistake.

14:56 ... 14:57 ... 14:58 ... 14:59 ...

And that's it. Joe's fifteen minutes are up.

Don't let history's door hit you on the fanny on your way out.

Newsperson responds:

David Kaye: The difference between being a newsperson from Metro on KGO and being an employee of KGO as a newsperson is the difference between night and day.

If you're at KGO and there is an important story of local interest you can go longer with your newscast and in fact receive clearence from the news director who is there or avaiable to station newspeople. So at KGO both the talk show host and the newsperon have some power of influence at the station.

On the other hand if you're at Metro you have no power at all and you must get in and out with your newscast in a tight window.

John Rotham can be enjoyable and yes it's hard to tell if he's sincere. I do know for a fact that he was always sincere with Jackson Ivey who was axed out by Metro in September after 10-years. John called over to Metro a few times and became very pissed off when they would not tell him what happed and even more pissed when they did.

John then took the time to call Jackson Ivey at his home and has looked into the possibility of bringing him into the KGO newsroom directly

Back to Karel I just read the allaccess.com story and heard the tape. It sounds like he believes that he is industructable and can do anything he wants.

Will he self distruct? Your thoughts?

Newsperson

Yes, he will self-destruct, no doubt. Throw in the racist Ray Tal. (overnight, 1-4 who contines to call white callers whitey (sp.?) or cracker. Come on Mickey, get up and listen to this irrogant & racist talk-show imposter.

I've only ever been on the radio as a guest (twice on KGO in the 80s). But I would think that the best course of action for a DJ - and especially a talk host - is to place all profanities and dirty words in a mental "lock-box" so to speak - when on the job - to avoid the risk of having them go out over the air.

We all remember doing this as kids when we were around parents or adults who would have gotten us in trouble if we had uttered expletives. I work in an office with a lot of very nice, but socially conservative and religious people, so I've learned to watch my tongue.

What's so hard about that?

Why was the youtube link to this madman's verbal assualt deleted? It was posted earlier (briefly) and now it's gone. I listened to it. It's explosive. I've never heard such foul language go over a radio station's airwaves!

Didn't see nor hear it. Don't care. What a thread! "Mental lock box"--great phrase! It's always worked for me. I try never to use profanity so I never have to "adjust" my speech patterns. However, I may have forgotten my name on-air once or twice and gotten the calls twisted but no one's perfect!

typical liberal drivel. No one wants to blame this idiot, no talent hack Karel for his own pathetic rantings. Probably was Bush's fault, right?

This [EDIT] should be fired and all of you frauds who support him know it. How bad is it that KGO can't even find a local gay host in San Francisco and has to ISDN in one from Long Beach?

Lame!

Regardless of whether the news person is from KGO or Metro, some of the intros are embarrassing to the news person and to those of us listening. This is especially bad when the host is joking around and the lead story in the newscast is a downer. (I'd suggest to KGO and Metro news people reading this that it might be a good idea to lead with a neutral story rather than a downer such as a car crash or a fire, just in case the host is jocular.)

John then took the time to call Jackson Ivey at his home and has looked into the possibility of bringing him into the KGO newsroom directly

That's a very nice gesture, and I'd look forward to hearing him again. He's very good. I also wish Kim McAllister would be able to get more KGO (versus Metro) duties. She's an excellent writer and reporter.

I'm of three minds on Karel.

First, personally I hate his show. I hate the chip on his shoulder, the me-me-meism, etc. Vote 1 against.

Second, when he's talking about something he knows thoroughly he's excellent. When he talks about growing up in Long Beach and living in the 'hood, and eating out of dumpsters, and living in a car and whatnot, that is priceless radio. But it is only this kind of subject matter where he can hold his own. Vote 1 for.

Third, when he's doing a subject he knows nothing about he's horrible. The less he knows the more he interrupts the guest. Vote 1 against.

Fourth, I think KGO needs a "Karel-type" in order to balance out the schedule. And he has his fans. Vote 1 for. You won't catch me listening to him, but I'm happy a Karel-type is there. I wish it wasn't Karel, though. There are plenty of people who sound like loose canons who aren't. Hell, I'm that way myself. The audience doesn't have to know that.

So, on my personal tally that's 2 votes for Karel and 2 against.

As you say, he comes across as if he's indestructible. In the early years we dealt with his emotional problems. Now we're dealing with his bravado. Not nice. It was better when he was putting his emotional laundry out on the air and he was near-meltdown. At least that gave us some good listens.

I'm not a Laura Schlessinger fan, either, but you can bet that when she was near meltdown after Bill Ballance posted the naked photos of her on the Web, I listened to her every day for a couple weeks.

Will he self-destruct? No, I doubt it. He'll learn his lesson and check his obscenities and profanities at the door. He values the KGO job too much. Will KGO put up with him anymore? Now that is the real question.

First, you must be very young if Karel's antics freak you. Second, it's not explosive. It's a stupid rant by someone who should know better.

Yeah, it's easy to adjust one's speech on the radio (or even in this forum, for that matter). The problem I seem to have is adjusting it when I talk in person with someone who annoys me. I've said many things in person I regret. But when I see a mic or I'm in a room where one might be, I go all golly, gee wiz, and holy moley.

As to forgetting a callsign, that's happened to me. In one weekend I did a shift each on KSOL 107.7, KCSM-FM, and KWUN (now defunct). I don't remember exactly, but I did catch myself saying a couple wrong calls and caught myself mid-breath. KWUN had the foresight to have its positioner phrases printed out on the console. Given how many people went through that place on their way to or from other stations, it's no wonder.

What was worse was partying all night, going home, getting 3 hours sleep, and then going to KWUN at 6am and walking all over the first 30 seconds of "Sally Go Round the Roses" saying utter nonsense. I didn't realize I'd done that, but I was running an aircheck at the time and heard it much to my embarrassment later. Thank goodness swear words don't come to me easily.
