kari Steele joins KOST

I forgot she was still on the radio since I dont listen to 104.3 on a regular basis anymore since its Rhythmic AC days. Shes joining Mark in the morning while Kristin is on maternity leave. Once Kristin is back Kari will take over KOST middays. So whos taking over middays on MYFM? Maybe Lisa Foxx or another VT dj from another market.

It all starts to dovetail. Bryan Simmons isn't renewed, that frees up a shift on KOST who had been looking for another midday tracker for months, but for some reason they couldn't find one they like. The KBIG pd who is Stella Prado's boss wants to move Kari there, but one full-time shift has to be voice tracked, so Simmons goes, gets replaced with a recorded show and life goes on. They did this to him 10 years ago and yet, they brought him back and he improved the ratings. Now it's, "Hey thanks, but you drew short straw again Bryan" and Stella Prado gets overruled again by the guy from New Zealand so he can hire someone to put on middays at his station, someone he didn't inherit, someone who's beholding to him more than someone who was already there would be. I thought that kind of childish crap died a long time ago. Leave it to CC to "import" someone who just nutty enough to run his stations like a soap opera. Did I miss anything?

No calguy you pretty much broke it down to me which is why 103.5 sounds like crap now. It's clear that Clear Channel doesnt care about the vaule of that station and the OM of KOST not the PD Stella doesnt know how to run a AC station. Its very bland with boring music. If my memory is right Stella was there before Andrew was brought in from the Bay Area and she had full control musically of the station?

I pieced it together after speaking to a few friends at CC. This Jeffries guy is as devious as they come, but because he has management fooled into thinking he's some wonder-boy, he's held in some kind of high regard by the programming stooge in Pittsburgh and the Cluster VP/GM. From what I've heard a major portion of the employees in Burbank have complained about what a jerk he is but are always met with the GM asking, if he's so bad how do you explain KBIG's great ratings? Well, that's easy and it has nothing to do with his programming abilities, which are limited and all to do with the music the station plays and the lack of competition for it. Unless you realize that all of the bad decisions he's made have hurt KOST and given KBIG a clearer path to higher ratings. KOST's music is horrible now and the library seems to be smaller than ever, at least the rotations seem tighter than size one pantyhose on an elephant. The station is one big contest machine. Every time they go into a break, they're talking about a give away, so how can a content provider, IE the jock even show any personality? I used to listen to Simmons and he used to be all about artist info. Not so the last year or so. Guessing he was told he was talking too much, but he still seemed to throw some facts in when he could. But now that "new direction" term gets thrown in to the mix and you have another term like Roy Laughlin's "Rightsizing" remark the last time they fired Bryan Simmons. It's that crazy executive doublespeak, it's bull$#^& and it's easily identifiable by anyone with a brain. Upon further investigation, there's a whole lot more to what's been going on at that end of the CC building. I've heard some real horror stories the last few days with everyone at KOST and KBIG wanting out with nowhere to go. What "AJ" has done to the people there is nothing short of a crime. "Here, I need you to do the same unnecessary work over and over again because I don't like it, but I can't tell you why?" He's small market PD who somehow has the CC suits bamboozled into thinking that he and his accent are the company saviors. I have probably revealed too much from what I heard, but it starts to piss you off when you hear about what's happening. For now, the ratings are high for KOST and with no discernible competition they will still do well. They gutted WLTW New Yorkl and after few down books it came back. It will here too I guess, how sad. Yeah, you've got an information leak in Burbank and word is starting to trickle out about how low the morale is at stations that should be fun, nice places to work. But you can't enjoy the ratings success when you've got a guy who has serious issues and he's in charge, Ugh....

Clear Channel in particular seems to care less and less if their DJs are known in the market. Their new Oldies 103.7 in the Bay Area has only one DJ (Celeste Perry) who has worked in the Bay Area before, and is known to Classic Hits listeners.

And as far as I know, they're all voice-tracked. The question is - given that the VTed jocks are only allowed to open the mic one time for about 10 seconds during every 5 or 6 song set, does it really make any difference, anyway?

Kind of sad.

My wife is the target KOST listener for sure, and they are still her favorite station, but I have noticed she doesn't listen to them as much as she used to. The change is incremental and I am sure she doesn't even notice that she uses the station less than she used to. I notice because I am much more in tune to all things radio than she is - to her it is background music.

I use her as an example for my main point which is that when a station (or any business really) that is in a dominant position starts to mess with the very elements that made them successful in the first place, the resulting loss in listenership or sales may not be evident right away as people will give them the benefit of the doubt for awhile because they assume the change is a one or few times deviation from what they know. When they see the changes are far more permanent than they had originally thought, then the reduction which may have been incremental to start with, becomes much more heavy. KOST is bordering on that threshold now.

Sorry, didn't answer you question in my last dissertation. Yes, she was a major market PD before Jeffires and successful at that, trained by Jhani Kaye. For some reason CC thinks they need a director of AC formats, but clearly they don't. Especially one with zero background in the genre. Same goes for the guy giving the orders in Pittsburgh. I googled him and came up with a Rock background. They try to program every format as if it's the same. When Jeffries tried it his way a year or so ago they down-trended for the better part of a year. My sources say he was so clueless he went to the full-timers what's left of them to ask what was wrong with the station? They tweaked it and it started to come back up. Now if you're the director of AC programming, shouldn't YOU know what was wrong? That station from what I heard was the best place to work in the building before guys like Andrew Jeffries showed up. CHR/Rock guys, no clue bout AC. They may have taken the title, but they're no Jhani Kaye.

I am no radio buff, I just know what works for me....

...KOST for may years has had a winning format with "Listen while you work" & "Love Songs". I love listening to Mark & Brian in the morning; however they are a bit risky for work. That is where KOST has done so well is with the "At Work" listeners, which I would think would draw advertisers.

The mix at KOST used to really work because you could hear a song from the 60's followed by a song from today. Generally hitting every demographic. A great family station too. My kids would probably have never heard much of the Beatles, or Nat, Journey, the Carpenters if the mix did not include current songs. This PM your all are talking about apparently has been chipping away at the song selection and this is why many listeners are getting upset when they are told that KOST is no longer are playing their song.

I already know people who were so upset with the sudden departure of Kim, they no longer listen to KOST. Listeners get attached to talent. They start to feel like they know them. Become invested in the stories of their family, friends and events. It's like canceling "Dances with the stars" when there are three contestants left. The feeling of being robbed.

And now that they pulled a Kim on Bryan; I'm sure more will leave KOST. I can not imagine not tearing up at Christmas time listening to Brian making another Christmas wish come true...

...and Christmas songs...the selection has been cut drastically. You can not play Christmas songs 24 hours a day and only have a handful of Christmas songs. Last years sucked compared to the previous years.

I myself have called Mr. Bryan and asked him to wish a co-worker a happy birthday. They are so surprised and happy when they hear it and when family and friends say they heard it too. You don't hear birthday wishes any more. Not like you could get a hold of anyone anyways, due to the fact that there are so many contests...the lines are jammed.

I also have called to ask for music information (Bryan was always the most informative), however, again, you can not get through right now and they do not have anyone else answering the lines.

From everything I am gathering from previous posts; there were 2 baskets filled with eggs and this KIWI is taking all of the eggs from one basket and overflowing the other basket.

I just don't get it. I'd rather work towards two winning horses. What's the worst that can happen...
...you end up with 1st & 2nd place finishers.

If getting rid of all of the live talent; especially when you have such a respected staff, is only to save a few bucks: maybe the KIWI is the on who should have been thrown overboard, because it sounds like he is sinking the KOST.

Well there you have it. PenelopeLuvsPepe is not a radio person, just a loyal listener and she can hear the difference. Proves that people, real live air talent, are a factor in a radio stations success. This seems to be lost on the suits, who just care about counting their beans. Long time listeners bond with the talent, imagine that. Oh and that's PPM, stands for the People Meter, the way stations get their ratings now days. Veyr honest and insightful post PenelopeLuvsPepe

How many good people have been pushed out the door at KBIG and KOST over the last 10 years?

Sadly, this is what the business has turned into. Huge profits can be made with voicetracking. And eventually, they'll figure out a way to get cheaper voicetrackers and save more money. And then even the voicetrackers will go, replaced with voice synthesizers, and a part timer to type the text into it. And then they'll fire the part timer.

Why even bother with VTing? Look at JACK-FM and Playlist 92.7. Most people who actually care about the music available on SoCal radio couldn't care less about announcers. If a listener wants info on music, there are many ways they can get it.

And yet for me personally, I find myself listening to real OTA radio stations from out-of-market online and and on my iPhone (thru the TuneIn Radio Pro app). Maybe I'm a dinosaur but I actually care about a radio air talent telling me something unique or interesting about one or two of the five or six tracks they just played or are about to play. WHO does that on LA area stations? Many of the English language music radio stations in the LA area must think people are morons.
