Karilynn and Kat Country 100.7

Things seems to be getting hot over at Kat Country 100.7 in Victorville over the laying off of long time DJ Karilynn with Jimmer and Karilynn.

It probably has to do with these facts....

There are 32 commercial stations that are home to the market.
There is only $8 million in revenue to be divided among the 32.
Only 37% of market radio listening is to stations in the metro.
This has to be high on the list of "America's worst radio markets."

Perusing some of the Facebook comments it's interesting to note a few people have said they'll tune to L.A. stations.

Though not much of a factor, when I have driven around that portion of the high-desert I've noticed Las Vegas radio stations come it quite clear in some areas.

Again, not much of a factor, but just another little thing that chips away at the already fragile Victorville market.

I understand that there are 32 commercial stations in the market but,

In the immediate Victorville/Apple Valley/Hesperia area, no LA stations come in clearly as a "city grade" signal. Most of the Inland Empire stations like 96.7/97.5/ 99.1/103.9 come in but their really isn't a lot of radio stations to choose from in the area.

The market extends all the way to Barstow and south to 29 Palms and Yucca Valley and the fact is that the local commercial share is less than 40%... meaning 60% of the listening is to non-coms and out of market stations.

KGGI alone has a 13 share, which is equal to a full third of all the listening to the Victor Valley "home" stations.

There's only like how many, 9 FMs reachable in the Victor Valley? Here's some I've remember getting on my way to Vegas:

94.3 KDUC
95.9 KXXZ
The Highway Stations (96.9 KHDR, 98.1 KRXV, 107.3 KIXW)
97.5 KLYY
99.1 KGGI
100.7 KATJ
103.1 KVFG

Wow, not much variety... not to mention, I can't get any LA area stations with the exception of KOST 103.5 and 104.3 MYfm, but extremely weak. I did, however manage to get somewhat a weak-moderate signal of 95.5 KLOS until I reached Barstow. 93.1 The Party, 92.3 KOMP and 104.3 Now FM Las Vegas have a very, very faint signal in the area. Most start coming in by the time I reach the stateline.

Do any LA area stations even reach all of the IE?

Yes, the non-directional Mt Wilson signals cover most of the IE market, and get big numbers there.

Only 30% of IE listening is to local, home to market, stations. Most of the rest is to LA stations. 5 of the top 10 12+ are LA stations, and 10 of the top 20 are as well.

In the Victor Valley market, the important thing is that enough outside signals cover large percentages of the population and the end result is that 60% of listening is to outside stations.

One observation seems to apply to most situations like this... when listeners in a smaller but adjacent market can get the larger adjacent market's stations, they get lots of listening. The bigger market "sound" seems to make a difference, even if the traffic and commercials are not local.

There are....what?...100,000 people in Victorville? That's like Inglewood having 32 stations.

Just over 510,000. But the market covers not just the Victorville / Hesperia / Apple Valley area, but runs out to Barstow and down to 29 Palms. Market 117 in population, 168 in revenue. The nearby Palm Springs market, about 80,000 fewer people, has nearly 50% more radio revenue.

And I'll bet far fewer home to market stations.

32 stations is insane for half a million population.
