KARL KING DIED

S

Guest
Karl King, a former news director at KFJZ AM in Fort Worth and KBOX in Dallas, back in the 1960's has died, according to the Dallas Morning News.

A former Marine and POW for several years, he is best remembered in the radio industry as one of the first to report on the assasination of JFK in Dallas on KBOX. He was manning the newsroom at KBOX when colleague Sam Pate relayed the first report moments after the incident. Throughout the day and weekend and on, King became the United Press International voice to the nation.

Very sad to hear that. Sam Pate's doing pretty badly himself right now, and no one knows how much longer he's going to last. And their other KBOX compadre from the JFK assassination, Ron McAlister (Ron Jenkins) is still mostly bedridden after a series of strokes over the last few years, and at last check, is now blind.

Speaking of UPI, a little-known factoid: The other UPI reporter in town to cover JFK (and was a few feet behind Ruby when Ruby was shot) was Geoff Edwards, whom we'd know later as an affable game show host from the old "Treasure Hunt" and "Starcade" and "Jackpot!", and as the renegade L.A. jock in the late 70s that refused to jump on the anti-Cat Stevens bandwagon and drop his songs from his playlist when Cat was identified as an Iranian sympathizer. Geoff ended up quitting his job over it.

Ruby was shot? I thought he died of "cancer" in prison.

You correct sir-- Ruby did die in jail from "Cancer"-- in January of 1968... clouded circumstances and all-- for those of you that are conspiracy nuts... make of it what you wish-- however HE was not shot-- HE DID SHOOT Oswald... that part is correct!

Just a thought
