Grounded Grid

Anyone know what the status of this place is? Mr. Camping's problems aside, I've heard there might be a longevity issue with the transmitter site. I also heard the station might have been offered for sale, so the site might be OK.

Anyone know for sure?
 
From what I know, the site is up for sale and I'm hearing Camping is trying unload all his commercial frequencies, so it's pretty likely KARR is too. The downside? Whoever buys it has to be super well financed anyway, as they'll have to move KARR to another site or diplex it somewhere - unless they buy the property with it. Which is prime real estate now on the Eastside and I'm hearing the encroaching NIMBYs are already whining about it (even though it was already there long before some of them were even born.)

KKDZ (who's nighttime signal is diplexed on the KARR site) will fare much better with Disney's finances. But that doesn't rule out Disney themselves potentially buying everything. We'll see. If they do, it REALLY ought to be interesting. (A future move to 1460 for ESPN?)
 
I STILL want those calls for an all-traffic format!!!
I could still realize my dream of 20 years ago to buy 1540, secure the KARR calls, and put it on air as KARR-154 with all-traffic/weather format!
 
Or get a license to put a new multi-tower 50kw signal on 540, aimed away from the northeast, and call it "KARR-54 where are you?" Now there's an ancient TV reference many of you probably won't get.

Yes..that was basis for KARR154 branding...
 
Call it crazy, but I am slightly surprised by the fact that there are no AM radio stations in Seattle going oldies. I mean most cities usually have atleast some weak powered solid gold station on the AM band, not in Seattle, unless you wanna feel 80 years old listening to KIXI, or be board with the same music over and over again on KMCQ\

About five years ago I had the wild and crazy idea of building my own 1000 watter AM oldies radio station, I cant say I have let that idea go yet :p

You and I had a similar idea. Mine was Northwest Commuter Radio, resurrecting the KCMU call letters. But I think KARR154 has a little more classic radio panache than my blander sounding Northwest Commuter Radio.

Besides, my idea was using mobile streaming and social media, texting and driver to driver coverage through cell phones.

But then I realized I would actually be creating the whole traffic problem to begin with.......

It still can be done....if you've got a solid and very well financed game plan, great local connections, a good staff and LOTS of advertising and promotion alone (radio stations/formats just don't get magically noticed anymore by the general public with every other distraction today. You really gotta be seen), it could actually work.

It's just that well-financing part is a bitch these days.....
 
Well I originally had the fantastic idea when I was about thirteen years old; and had little knowledge of how difficult it would actually be to build a radio station :( I thought I could get a licence to operate a 50,000 clear channel station from a lattice tower i built in my backyard... Fast forward four-five years to today, and I still would like to make the original idea happen somehow, though this may be a bit beyond me ;)
 
Thank you, I didn't realize that Al Lewis was on "Car 54..." but Joe E. Ross(who I once met) was the partner. My favorite Al Lewis story was that he was trying out for a part that wanted an "Al Lewis type" and didn't get it because he was too young!
 
Guys who are old enough to remember when the original "Locomotion" was a hit are now at or near 60.

Remember when our demo was described as "55-to-Death?" Yes, the boomers are not our parents and we are an affluent bunch, but advertisers are still reluctant to throw much budget at us. Worse, the agencies are still young and hip and more 55-phobic than ever.

It's KIXI or nothing terrestrial for pre-1970s music. Get Sirius/XM or better yet an iPod.
 
Oldies from the 50's and 60's can be enjoyed by a very large variety of people. My grandparents listened to oldies, my parents did, and I do as well. I dont really think the music on KIXI will hold up much longer..

Which kinda brings us full circle. KARR's original, pre-Family Radio format was Music Of Your Life.
 
Ahhh "music of your life", the most cheesy and canned radio format I have seen so far! I remember when my grandma used to listen to KIXI when they were employing the music of your life network, "Wink Martindale" hosted midays, it was terrible.
