KASB: Conditions Or Something else?

Most of the summer, KASB was weaker than it had been previously. In the past two weeks it seems they've returned to normal strength--or maybe even better here in northeast Seattle.
Anyone else notice this or know a reason for it?
When I first noticed this a week or two ago, Olympia was stronger than usual, with the 96.9 putting in a really hot signal.
But KASB has been consistently good since, with no enhancement to other areas.

Two words, Lazy Management! They simply do not care (and it shows)
The "weaker" signal you were hearing was most likely KGRG. KASB shut their transmitter off for 2 months.

of course they dont care! who the hell listens?

of interesting note: back in the mid/late 70's, me(a rabid radio tuner) and sis tuned into this station near bellevue, and won a sh*t load of records by being the correct number caller. i think we was the only listeners.

all excited by our winning success, dad drove us to the station the next week to pick up our bounty. we dreamed about all the cool records we won, only to have our hopes dashed with a box of radio promo 45's from unknown, no airplay, small label artists.

we spent the next day in a yawn fest listening session. oh well, the preexcitement at the time for us was worth it.

KASB has actually been off the air completely this summer. When I was in Bellevue a month or so ago, 89.9 was either KGRG or static. 96.9 "The Sound" puts in a better signal than when it was Real Country. Tr's been dieing here, with only an occasional KINK at times. Now, with KASB on, it dominates over KGRG about 75% of the time. Sometimes, when I'm walking around the neighborhood, KGRG dominates, but it's mostly KASB. Could it be because of summer vacation?

I think the "lazy management" were out with the kids on summer break. KASB is not run like KNHC by any means.....

So signal coverage changes with format? Probably a coincidence that there was also a power upgrade...

Don't forget that many low-watt high school and even college stations, the ones with a "hobbyist" format of volunteer hosts playing their favorite rock, or whatever they can find to piss off their parents, do not stay on the air when school is not in session. The kids can't get in the building, and there's no one to supervise their activities on school grounds during vacation weeks. They also are usually not broadcasting 24 hours a day, unless they've found funding for someone to program an automation computer system.

Those stations are usually not meant to be a competitive force in the local radio market, so it's not reasonable to hold them to the same standards as those who are. Which is why they're usually a low power FM, anyway.

I think the KASB facility is running way too hot for an 18 meters above HAAT and 60 watts. But don't worry your pretty little head, a monster 1.8 kilowatt firebreathing dragon coming off Whidbey Island is fast approaching on that channel. Its the newly awarded KSER retransmit facilty.
