KASB: The Lights Are On But Nobody'sHome

Obviously school is out, and KASB's programming is done for the summer. But their carrier is still on, and they've been running dead air since Saturday with no station IDs.
I don't know whether it's technically illegal to do that, but, if nothing else, they should drop carrier so folks can hear other stations on the frequency--KGRG, for example.
When I was in the biz, carrier would be dropped anytime the station wasn't running actual programming.
I'd think it should be in this case.
Don't they have the means at the high school to drop carrier, or at least do it remotely by phone?

I've been wondering that too. Cut the carrier and give us DX!

Guess that no one is there because it's summer, and no one comes back to the transmitter room until probably August.

sounds like a potential "attractive nuisance" situation. yep, im talkin' in regards to that young feller who was caught breaking into that human less station last month, in the south end, to play his classic rock collection on air. :)

The Bellevue School District would be wise to continue with their programming 24/7 over the summer otherwise the lack of program could trigger the "share time" provision in the FCC rules. A Class D such as KASB may continue to be licensed and go off the air in the summer months except that then opens themselves up to other entities challenging their license during the off hours and forcing another group to ask the FCC to utilize that frequency in that general area to be able to broadcast themselves. 47 CFR 73.561(a) and (b) "....all stations (NCE) that do not operate at least 12 hours per day each day of the year, will be required to share use of the frequency upon the grant of an appropriate application proposing such time share arrangement."

If I were on the Bellevue School Board I would be very, very nervous right now. The Board is the licensee serving as the governing body for the district.

You know, if they're going to WASTE all that electricity anyway, why not put it to GOOD USE? Assign a summer volunteer coordinator and let the local community use the frequency during the summer months?

Dead air with no top of the hour ID's: definitely illegal.

good idea mr bongwater, ill sign up for the 6 pm hour, and rant on air against obama, and the legalization of marijuana, and you can sign up for the 7 pm hour, and cancel out my rant. ::)

No, sorry Val, but this is not illegal. A Class D educational station may stay off the air during weekends, overnights and school breaks, including summer. However, they open themselves up to the share-time provision I mentioned above.

I should add that having a carrier on (as KASB does) does not mean that they can circumvent the rules. There is no program so they are "off the air" in theory. Their license may stay intact though, as I say, they open themselves up from some other local educational entity to come in and share their frequency.
