KASW TV Subchannel Airing

Was channel surfing this afternoon and came across a subchannel that my OTA DT TV picked up on 61.2 KASW SD. It appears to be a city illuminated at night. At first wondered if it was a city on the east coast and hurricane coverage. Hard to tell, I can see a body of water in the shot, appears to be live or streaming at least. Anyone else picking this channel up? Maybe a fluke from KTVK Control Room.

Charlie.

In the 8 PM hour, 61.2 was airing the 11 PM ET newscast from WVEC(TV) 13 Hampton VA
(Norfolk market). WVEC is also a Belo station. The 'cast was expanded and has been
running now for more than an hour--assuming it started at 11 ET/8 PT.

Gee, what a great idea. Someone must be thinking!

It would be a great idea....except that I've seen no advertising so how would I know it is airing? It's not as if we rescan daily.

Neither of Belo's Tucson stations, KMSB or KTTU, are airing the feed from WVEC.

In my case, I didn't have to rescan. My TV does an automatic update of channels several times a day, so I was able to pick up 61.2 just by normal channel flip-thru.

That would have been a worthwhile function for converter boxes*. I keep forgetting about you geeks with those new-fangled digital TV sets. ;D

* - Of the 4 different brands of converter boxes I have all but one are a royal PITA to scan. Biggest issue being that the preset "favorites" are all reset thereby requiring you to go through the entire channel list afterward (which in itself takes awhile) and uncheck those you don't want to watch.

This "geek" just found it a convenient time nearly 4 years ago to replace 15-yo 20" and 10-yo 27" TV sets as a birthday present to himself. It's amazing how much money you can save up when you don't have to pay for cable/satellite. :)

So as far as I can tell, flagship WFAA in Dallas seems to have been the only other Belo station to pick up live Irene coverage from WVEC 13 Hampton VA. They replaced an existing weather loop on channel 8.2 with the WVEC coverage. KASW, on the other hand, is broadcasting the WVEC feed on a subchannel, 61.2, that didn't exist before. It seems unlikely that they would create a brand new subchannel for this (other Belo cities have seen hurricanes before), so it begs the question: what was/is KASW planning to add to the Phoenix OTA TV scene?

Since 61 is programmed by 3, I wonder if 61.2 is being set up to carry something that 3 doesn't want in its space.

Maybe Bounce TV? Belo is carrying it in Houston at least.

If they did add a subchannel network to 61.2, it would most likely be either Antenna TV or The Cool TV. Given 3's inability to get ThisTV carried on cable, I'm not sure they're overly excited about adding another subchannel service.

Unfortunately, Phoenix's demographic makeup makes Bounce TV an unlikely choice. While Houston's Black population in is calculated to be about 25% of the overall population, in Phoenix, it's only 6.5%. In Harris County, Texas, the Black population is approx. 18.5%, while in Maricopa County, Arizona, it's about 3.75%.
