KATA goes digital

D/FW's MTV Tres affiliate on channel 50 flash-cut to digital today.

They'd applied for a DTV license several months ago, but they were still on analog long after several other Mako-owned stations had gone digital, so today's switch surprised me a bit. By now I was expecting them to wait until 6/12 and switch at the same time as the "big boys."

For 15 kilowatts, they are packing a powerful punch from Cdear Hill. I'm just using the little whip antenna packaged with the 7-inch Radio Shack Accurian portable and KATA-DC's signal here in Frisco is surprisingly solid.

Being up on channel 50 will help with small antennas. A half-wavelength is just over 8 inches.

Incidentally, like several of Mako's other channels (3, 31, 34), they multiplexed their signal today. 50.2 through 50.4 have no programming yet, though.

There seems to be something a bit hinky about their PSIP. Most of my converter boxes handle it fine, but one (the Channel Master CM-7000) has 50.1 reversed with 50.2, and there is no audio. I did a complete rescan but it didn't help.

KATA seems to be picking up a lot of Spanish Christian programming. 50.2 became Reino Unido, formerly on KVFW 38, and today 50.4 became a simulcast of KZFW 6/KPFW 61.1. 50.4 is missing the audio for some reason, however.

50.3 is just color bars.

And now KATA's subchannel lineup is complete. Spanish-language network Azteca America moved from sister station KODF's analog signal to digital subchannel 50.3 today.

Although KODF has applied to switch to digital and move from channel 26 to 27, currently it doesn't seem to be broadcasting on either channel. But those preferring to watch Azteca in analog ::) can still do so; KODF's translator, KLEG 44, is not owned by Mako and is still on the air.

That's the second LP station to go silent in the last month. KVFW 38 has apparently been off-air since Reino Unido moved to 50.2.
