Katrina-bred MNF conflict on 9/19?

From http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cnnsi-nfldeliberating&prov=cnnsi&type=lgns ...

NFL deliberating

Peter King, SI.com

FOXBORO, Mass. -- Faced with uncertainty and chaos in New Orleans, the NFL is considering moving the Saints' first home game of the season -- Sept. 18 against the Giants -- to Giants Stadium, possibly to be played Monday night, Sept. 19.

The Saints are moving their base of operations to San Antonio for the foreseeable future after Thursday night's preseason game at Oakland. But it's uncertain where their home games will be played because the Superdome was damaged so extensively by Hurricane Katrina.

Sources with both teams told SI.com that they had heard there's a good chance the game will be moved to New Jersey. Giants president John Mara said before the Giants-Patriots preseason game he was surprised he hadn't heard the news officially from the league yet.

But the league had not determined with certainty the site of the game as of Thursday night.

It's thought the Saints would prefer to play the game on Saturday, Sept. 17, because playing on the Sept. 19 would give them a short week of preparation heading into a difficult Week 3 game at Minnesota. But playing Saturday might be tough in New Jersey because of a massive Rolling Stones concert scheduled for Giants Stadium on Thursday night. Tough, but not impossible.

Playing Monday night in the shadow of New York would also give the league a chance to promote the massive relief effort sure to be under way in the United States bt then. And you can never underestimate the league's desire to promote charitable efforts to the max. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue may have to weigh the competitive interests of the itinerant Saints against the value of moving the game to a Monday night in the media capital of the world, where the outpouring of emotion and public giving could be significant.

The Alamodome in San Antonio is the other prime possible site for a Sept. 18 Saints game.

Okay... how would television handle a Aints/Jints game rescheduled for 9/19? And what would be done with the MNF game currently scheduled for that night (Washington at Dallas)? Any scenarios? Let's hear'em.

Except for the coaching matchup (Parcells-Gibbs), the R***kins-Cowboys matchup is a yawner; the Indigenous Peoples are losing and the Cowboys are still rebuilding. Better to crank up the sappy meeter and show the Saints (with plenty of references as to how Eli Manning's dad used to play in New Orleans).

Not a bad idea. Would ABC show WSH/DAL in those markets and NO/NYG in the rest of the country, do you think? Would WSH/DAL be moved to ESPN and NO/NYG go on ABC nationwide?

> This would not be the first time there have been two Monday Night football games on the same night. It is rare but there have been occasions where the baseball playoffs have caused two games to be played on a Monday night. If I remember correctly from when the Bears where involved in this situaation back in 1997 I think. The Chicago market and who ever they were playing, I forgot who it was recived the Bears game and the rest of the country got the regularly scheduald MOnday night game. I remember the Bears game was the better of the two games. I wsa able to watch both since the cable company we had carried both WLS TV 7 Chicago and WQAD TV 8 in Moline. Both games hit halftime at the same time so while one game was in a commercail break the other had the half time report.

I seem to recall it was Miami that the Bears played. I think it was just markets in the Florida peninsula plus Chicago that got that game. My memory could be fuzzy on this, though.

There was also an occassion in 1987 when a Minnesota Vikings' home game scheduled for a Sunday afternoon at the Metrodome had to be moved to a Monday night because the Twins had qualified for the World Series, and had to play (Game 2?) at the Metrodome on Sunday.

The re-scheduled Vikings' game was broadcast on ABC in Minneapolis/St. Paul and the visiting team's home market. The rest of the network got the originally-scheduled game.

As regards to September 18th, I guess that the New Orleans Saints/New York Giants game will end up being played that day at the footbal stadium on the Louisiana State campus in Baton Rouge. I would expect that LSU will become the site of the Saints' home games for 2005.

It was a game IN Miami in 1997, moved due to a World Series game in Joe Robbie Stadium.

All I do know is this: The Saints are opening at Carolina on the 11th (1 PM ET-FOX). Wasn't it announced that their home games would be played at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, TX?

Meanwhile, this may not be the right time to ask this question, but is the NFL going to waive the home market blackout rule for the "home" Saints games? (How was this handled when the Chicago Bears played their "home" games in Champaign, IL?)

When the Bears played in Champaign, IIRC the large seating capacity of U of I's Memorial Stadium was reduced by 20,000 or so seats and the games sold out easily (they probably would have sold out anyway, given the Bears' rabid fan base). Not sure what the NFL plans on doing regarding the Saints at LSU, at this point I suppose it's incredibly irrelevant anyway.

It's official now that the game will be played at Giants Stadium. If the game is played on Monday, hopefully one of the games will be farmed out to ESPN. The Cowboys always get huge ratings (and the triplets are being inducted into the Ring Of Honor), so I don't think ABC will reduce that game to a regional telecast.

Saw on the AP while at work on Friday night the game will be played at Giants stadium. According to the story, they are concidering three options. Playing the game on Saturday the seventeeth, Playing the game on the 18th as part of a double header. Or on Monday the 19th. This according to the story on AP from Friday.

I would expect that only New Orleans and New York/New Jersey would get the Giants-Saints, whether it be on Saturday or Monday. This is what happened with Denver/Minnesota in 1987 and Chicago/Miami in 1997, only the local markets got the moved game. A similar situation happened last year with the Dolphins home games moved--the Titans game was on Saturday afternoon and the Steelers game Sunday night, both only seen on CBS in the local markets.

I know it is irrelevant and trivial and the Saints could care less, but I don't agree with the decision to essentially give the Giants an extra home game. I would have done everything possible to have the game at LSU. Hopefully the other 7 will be at LSU. I've also heard San Antonio, Los Angeles, and Orlando mentioned as possibilities to host the other seven home games, and that the Saints could end up in LA for good.
