Katy Perry Banned From "Sesame Street"

The producers of "Sesame Street" have yanked a segment featuring celebrity guest Katy Perry, after hearing from parents that the outfit she wore on the show was "too revealing":

Memo to Sesame Workshop: What else would you expect after agreeing to let a recording artist, whose very first hit song was "I Kissed A Girl (And I Liked It)", on your little children's show?

This incident mirrors the decision to let MTV program the Super Bowl halftime show several years ago... you get what you pay for.

By the way: the woman who oversaw that decision has gone on to bigger and better things:

Oh no, an inch or two of female flesh. ;D

Today's show has been brought to you by the letter "B" (cup)?

Memo from Sesame Workshop: Yall have to leave people some wiggle room to admit when they make mistakes, even if you don't see them as mistakes.

I personally liked the video. Disdn't see anything wrong with it and it would make me watch more with my 1 & 3 year olds. (my 5 year old says she's too old for Sesame Street)

Neither did I. This video was actually pretty good, not at all what I expected to see after reading that article. Frankly, I've seen far more objectionable things foisted on kids via Sesame Street.

Personally I don't see the big deal. I have frequently seen her wearing a lot less. :D

The headline on this thread - "Katy Perry Banned from Sesame Street" implies that she's been blackballed from the show. All the article states is that the show has decided not to air her segment.

So presumably she can appear on the show again in less revealing clothing.

Comment: She's a singing star and sex symbol, not a children's show producer. The producers of the show and the director of the segment were responsible for having her dress appropriately. In fact, I would presume that they supplied the costume she wore

It has happened before where celebrities have appeared on the show, but were asked to change their outfit. I know it happened with Gloria Estefan and En Vogue back in the early 90s. I didn't even think there was anything wrong with Katy Perry's outfit, I think it was mostly because of all the stupid YouTube comments people were posting that made them take it off.

Also, I think parents are just whining about the fact that their kids can't grow up the way they did. Sesame Street has gotten a lot more celebrity heavy over the last few years. They had celebrities on when I was a kid (Smokey Robinson, Whoopi Goldberg, Bobby McFerrin), but not nearly as often as they do now. And another argument: The kids would be looking at Elmo, they're not looking at Katy. They don't even pay attention to cleavage at that age.

They don't hold a candle to "The Simpsons" in that category, though.

She didn't even look too revealing. Parents can be so overreactive these days... ::)

I would love to see here wearing a WHOLE lot less! ;D

I agree. 8)

Same here. Who wouldn't want to play dress-up with her. 8)

Wow. Some people have overactive imaginations or something.
Such cleavage looks like 1956, I wonder how that's so much of a problem.

Let's hope the people so offended never go to a beach.

I have a much harder time with the musical part, and Elmo just running off like that.
Maybe these people who called for the removal were upset that ELMO was upset, perhaps having just noticed
something new about his friend Katy that he hadn't ever noticed before, and he ran off because he was embarassed.

My conclusion: If Elmo had kept his cool, the offended folks wouldn't have noticed the cleavage either.
Also a poor example, when dealing with a gorgeous woman, "freaking out" is not an option.

You mean, like this?

Ah, the old "can't take a joke" crowd. Love it.

Actually, that's article was interesting. First I'd heard of that little brouhaha.

I'll say this: as most of us are aware, a "joke" is funny when it comes from someone whom you know is poking fun in a good-natured way. It tends to be taken as an offense when the "joker" is someone who is no friend of the recipient of the joke. That's the root of why this particular parody didn't sit well among fans of Fox News. It's simply human nature.

It's pretty clear how most of those who work at CTW feel about Fox News as they are well known for tilting toward the political left. Hence, no nasty little puns about entities that represent the more "progressive" point of view.

Looking at cleavage is like looking at the sun, you don't stare at it.
