Katy Perry... Your market response?

Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" is one of the most requested songs at our station, how does your audience feel about it? If you're playing it are you dayparting it out of mid-day's?

HUUUUUUUUUUGE Response. I've got it in A, no dayparts. I thought about it at first, but the response I got was too big to limit it.

I think it's going to burn fast, but for now, spin it!

Our station leans more toward the "AC" side of the term "Hot AC" and we will not be playing that song. There have been a number of requests for it but we'll let the local CHR have it. The burn on this song will be way too high for an adult AC audience. Others may differ but that's the way I see it here.

I run a Hot AC / AAA / College hybrid, and we won't be touching it...probably for the fact we are owned by the local school system. Just a little too controversial for us. We've had requests, but not overwhelming. Plus...I just think the song is awful. No good qualities about it. Just my observation, but Kerli is much much better. We'll let the commercial CHR/HotAC take Katy Perry and we'll take Kerli's "Walking On Air"...I think they will spin "I Kissed A Girl" 50x a week and make the listeners switch to us. :)

By the way if you are looking for a little fun pop/rock, try The Ting Tings "Shut Up And Let Me Go". MTV is spinning, and we are getting excellent response from women & girls.

Kerli is probably going to go into rotation soon on my station. She sounds like a more mainstream Bjork. Walking on Air is a pretty good song, and actually getting some spins on Alternative at the moment.

I Kissed a Girl is just a perfect summer hit. Great beat, upbeat tempo. Lyrics? Slightly controversial... helps promote the word of mouth. Yeah.. I've recieved some negative feedback on it... but the positives greatly outweigh the cons.

The Ting Tings I'm actually going to try in the new music feature tomorrow. I really HATE the song, but we'll see what the listeners think.

PS- Songs you should get on NOW:

Thriving Ivory- Angels on the Moon ....... if this guy had a better voice, it'd be a surefire #1. If the listeners get past his voice, they'll hear probably one of the best written songs of the year.

OAR- Shattered.....When you can get added to WPLJ and Mix 107.3 in DC before the street date, it looks GOOD. It's the perfect Hot AC hit.

Plus... "Broken" by Lifehouse is finally officially going for adds!

I am not sold on this record for Hot AC. A very wise and respected programmer told me many years ago, "what you don't play won't hurt you." I feel this song falls into that category for our station. If it works for you, sweet!!

That's the great thing about radio. From market to market, station to station...every competetive situation is different and what works in one place may not work somewhere else!

I was told the same - "You will never get into trouble for what you DON'T play".

I run a Hot AC station with a rock lean in a major overseas market and this just doesn't fit in with who we are. I'll let our CHR have all the fun with this one.

Agreed on both. I added O.A.R. and Lifehouse last week and already we are seeing a response. We are also spinning Flyleaf 'All Around Me' and that appears to be gaining some interest too.

I'm starting O.A.R. Monday...great song. I will check out some of the others. I tend to watch the FN-MTV show to see what the kiddies are seeing.

Hot Adult Contemporary/Modern AC/Re: Katy Perry... Your market response?

A couple things...

OAR- great song!

Sure you'll never get in trouble, but I would rather be a station that acts on music and doesn't re-act. Yeah I get it Hot AC, for the most part, isn't known for breaking a record but we have to remember that the older female audience still wants to feel that she is up to speed on new things.

I've heard this song on Alternative stations... so it's not completely owned by CHR.

My Hot AC thankfully is not on this novelty record... they're very late to add stuff though, so I'll keep my fingers crossed they stay away from it.

Some of the biggest songs in the Hot AC format are novelty songs/one hit wonders:

Howie Day- Collide
Del Amitri- Roll To Me
The Wallflowers- One Headlight
Natalie Imbruglia- Torn
Eagle Eye Cherry- Save Tonight
Tal Bachman- She's So High
Vertical Horizon- Everything You Want

And a lot more... maybe Katy Perry doesn't have longevity, but this song is a hit (most added on Mediabase this week)

Just for argument's sake... Howie Day had a pretty decent hit with "She Says."

And Vertical Horizon did pretty well with "Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning.)

And how did The Wallflowers "Sixth Avenue Heartache" or "Three Marlenas" or "The Difference" do at Hot AC?

Plus didn't Mambo #5 hit #1 at Hot AC?

All of those songs listed are indeed power golds for Hot AC. However they all fit a similar musical style which is the real bread and butter of Hot AC...guy (or girl) with a guitar. Oh, and a real message of some kind!

Sorry, you'll have to forgive my bias...and again keep in mind that our station is fairly tame for Hot AC...but I wouldn't put "I Kissed A Girl" in the same league as those power songs. Heck, I wouldn't put it in the same league as "Get Low" by Lil' Jon.

From the windoooooow....to the waaaaaaall...

let the sweat drip from my....

Anyway, same here. Katy Perry's song is not and never will be played on my station unless it gets to and stays #1 for, well, lets say 20 weeks? Not gonna happen. What's the next song she is pushing, isn't it titled "Ur so Gay"...people will be worn out very quickly. I don't think the attorney I just talked into underwriting a huge amount this next school sports year would like his name attached to her.

I can see not playing this song for all the obvious reasons, but if your listeners are banging down your door to hear it and you still don't play it, you just lost to internet radio, VH1, ipod and Sirrius or XM.

All who don't have to worry about pleasing some $2,000 a month client.

Again, it's all how your market responds, hence the title of the thread.

At our station, phone call requests comprise a very small portion of the audience at-large, and I have a feeling that this is probably the norm in most markets. IMO one of the best tools ever invented for radio jocks was Caller ID. It's always the same people who call and want to hear this junk (at least at our station). If we allowed phones to heavily influence our playlist, we'd have "Pour Some Sugar On Me" in our A rotation. Agreed that they can't be ignored, though. This is one of those instances where each individual PD has to weigh the potential benefits vs. the potential consequences. You're right, PWWO -- airplay of this song will be as different as each Hot AC station out there!

I have decided that Hot AC stations are like snowflakes...no two are the same...

Agreed that you can't let phone calls alone determine your playlist. At my station, I pretty much know the core group of regular callers and what their tastes are. When a song like this comes around that gets requests from people who don't normally call in, I go for it. If it motivated them to pick up the phone and ask me to play it again when usually they can't be bothered by calling a radio station, then I will definitely take it into consideration. Will the song probably drop quickly out of the playlist? Sure. It's novelty. But for now... it's proving to be a hit at my station.

Just because a song gets "most added" for a week doesn't always mean it's a "hit"... one need only look at Gwen Stefani's "Wind It Up" or Mariah's "Touch My Body" at CHR for evidence of that.

Ur So Gay has a nice guitar sound to it.

One hit wonders, (some of them) yes...novelty songs, hardly!?!
