KAVV 97.7 now KCNN

Hello & Mid-Day Greetings to Everyone ! Regarding my Beloved "Cave FM" in Benson, Az., It Just Doesn't sound & feel the same anymore. Paul & I had made arrangements for me to return to the Cave Waves on Sept. 1st. after recovering from hernia surgery but sadly, Paul died & those plans, gone with the wind. What's heartbreaking is that localization is gone & will Never return to this station & how it sounds to me, I can tell Right Away it's mechanized & automated with All the cave dj's (including myself) also gone. Now, I'm hearing spots from "out of town" with practically No Local businesses advertisements and PSA's & Absolutely No Classic Country Music. Also, for this station to lay claim to over 40 years of classic country is BULLS**T ! I know this b/c I worked @ the Cave for over 27 years. I'm listening to so called "locals" giving testimony that the new "canyon country" is The Best Station since sliced bread. Again, B.S. . Sadly, the sale of the cave came with the cost of the dj's (both full & part time) losing their jobs where I heard that the new owner was going to keep everything as it was, . . . . . Again, B.S. ! To me, it sounds like a "rehashment" of KIIM FM. So much for new radio station owners keeping their word as well as providing local employment. To quote a phrase from Mr. Horse . . . . "no sir, I don't like it " . .....to be continued :)

BTW, speaking of KHIL, for those who haven't seen it, a moving documentary about KHIL, the personal struggle of it's owner, and the deep connection the station has with it's listeners came out 4 years ago, it's called "Lonesome Willcox", and I'm sure it's still available on YouTube. It will truly give you an appreciation of small town radio like never before.

I think they might be better off with playing pre-2K Country music. Within KCNN's signal range are 3 other competing stations for Country, KIIM, KWCD (both focusing on newer Country), and KHIL with a wide range of Classic Country. The previous KAVV was a good choice skewing older, and was able to offer what the other competition didn't. As well as being very local, doing what is almost unheard of these days...live, local jocks all day. and night.

Lotsoff's KAVV also wasnt turning much if any of a profit at all

I believe that, with the labor cost involved, that must have eaten up any little profit he was making and then some. But I gotta say, he was really committed to keeping it live and local for 4 decades, no matter what it cost him.

Lottsoff said in his pitch selling the station that he was losing money each month.

You might not like the change but if it's losing money, it can't go on forever even if the guy had not died.

This whole dialog has me wondering if radio station owners have replaced used car dealers as the most despicable management people. Referring to the "promises not met" of course. It's a whole lot easier for the new guy to promise the world than explain why he's going to replace everyone with a computer.

Lotsoff had owned that station for decades. He was just one of a small batch of small station owners who was just "peculiar" or, more politely said, "eccentric".

In another thread, there is a discussion of an LPFM in Las Vegas that was run by a conspiracy theorist who had enlisted Chinese officials to fight the turn towards Communism in the USA. Go figure.

There was a licensee of a small market station in AZ who would give a presentation to the ASU Broadcast major seniors each year and then try to recruit one of them. He was looking for a new young boyfriend each year.

And, of course, the stories of racing to the bank with the paycheck to get there first before the funds were gone or finding that the insurance had been suspended are numerous and attributable to the 50% of US stations that were not profitable going back to the 50's.

There is no business that does not have its share of snarky people. Just look at Cryptocurrency in the last month.

The last month? The whole thing has been a scam from day one.

@Frank Luna Cave, udner lotsoff, wasnt turning a profit.... so should the new owner continue to lose money? Part of the lack of profit from Cave FM was having a bunch of live on air staff unfortunately.

Today, the now-KCNN ownership (Redrock Media Group) filed to upgrade the 97.7 FM station to a Class C3 and relocate to a tower site northwest of Benson. The signal still won't hit metro Tucson and actually pulls back a bit from its Sierra Vista coverage: Non-directional, 9.8kw ERP at 45 M HAAT - not a max-power situation.

Right now the engineering study is pretty much void:

"The proposed facility comply s (sic) with the applicable engineering standards and assignment requirements of 47 C.F.R. Sections 73.203, 73.207, 73.213, 73.315, 73.509, 73.515, 73.525, and 73.1125."

Given that KCNN falls inside the Mexico-US treaty zone the application probably will get the "thumbs down" until an in-depth study is offered.

The translator on 104.1 was operating from the KAVV "Eyesore" trailer in Benson. I expect that the new owner just shut it off when they stopped using that location to broadcast the main 97.7 frequency..

After Redrock quickly pulled their first C3 upgrade paperwork they refiled on 14 March. Again, it's the same issue with no technical study to confirm compliance:

Michi to the rescue! RECNET provided a much needed engineering annex and fixes to KCNN's proposed C3 upgrade. The mod is now "under review" by the FCC.

The proposed signal will be 25kw directional, with only about 2.9kw towards Sierra Vista but a full 25kw towards Tucson. A Mexican Class A-equivalent in Cananea, Sonora, got its required protection.

This should be successful if the Mexicans agree to it.

Paperwork was submitted today for Redrock Media (KCNN) to buy KDAP(FM) and KAPR (AM). "Kepadre" 930 AM runs Spanish. These Douglas stations went for $75,000 total. Of course the Agua Prieta stations rule the dial in this bordertown.
