KAVV Benson FSBO

I saw a posting at RadioTVDeals for "Southeast Arizona Stand Alone FM For Sale By Owner". The full listing is behind a "paywall" for subscribers. There are many candidates from Douglas to Nogales but here's at least one.

(BTW, KAVV's 60dBu contour does not reach Sierra Vista proper but the signal still blasts in there. From a 2018 posting it looks like a ratings leader. Below is a fun read. )

"CAVE-FM IS FOR SALE. Here are some facts"

AN INTERVIEW WITH PAUL LOTSOF, Manager and stock holder of CAVE FM.

Question: Where is CAVE-FM located?

Answer: Our studio is located in Benson which is a small town along Interstate 10 about forty miles east of Tucson. We transmit from a tower about seven miles east of Benson and the high elevation there allows our signal to be heard in Sierra Vista. Most of our audience is in the Sierra Vista area which has ten times the population of Benson. We also cover nearly fifty miles of the Interstate. ....

(more at the website..)

That is a fun read but there's a reason it has not sold for quite some time: it loses money. They claim they can't find salespeople. I read between the lines. Did you notice under listener survey that the station poster says "Nearly all the owners of the businesses in our area refuse to advertise with us even though our rates are dirt cheap". Sounds like that programming might not be as great as they think or that they'd rather lose money than go out and build relationships. They claim because they are located in Benson, Sierra Vista businesses don't consider the station as local. Really? Either the signal is bad there or it is a made up excuse for not succeeding. I read in there an owner that won't take responsibility for his lack of financial success with the station. It's always something else (being in Benson; most businesses refusing to advertise, etc.).

As for the format, I think it is too specialized for such a small universe of listeners. Classic Country is fine but I'd take a look at the demographics to figure out just how old I go on classics.

I surmise you have a station owner doing radio his way. That's fine but too often it's not the best choice or the best for sales. Even so, it's his station, his right and his choice.

I think he lost a lot of advertisers and support from the business community, due to his bizarre PSA's and stand on child pornography, of all things. I don't like to speak ill of the dead, but if you had ever met him, you can tell pretty quickly he had a few screws loose.

He had a lot of screws loose...he called the format Classic Country but it was not. KAVV played a number of currents and recent oldies. Along with a number of pop titles that didn't belong on the station. "Classic Country" was a small part of each hour's playlist.
