KAZG/KSLX

I'm gonna take some abuse for this but.....

Do these two stations share engineering talent? KSLX has a nifty web site and lots of contact info. KAZG has a phone number that wasn't answered. So I sent an email to the chief engineer at KSLX asking what's the story on the recent change to daytimer-only (although with 52 watts of night signal I'd get better coverage with my toaster).

I have to admit, I really like the old Lumberyard 1440. Just wish it had a better sig and a bit of reverb....oh, and was on nights too. Hey, I'd even volunteer to drive up and plug the transmitter in!!!

We'll give you a ride in the Gremlin!

Gumpdusky doesn't care about Lumberyard 14~Forty...they've got their hands full with losing money at KDUS. They should sell both AMs and be done with it.

The Nurse and I think they could easily fetch $5m for both.

KDUS is not loosing money it makes money.. 1440 and 100.7 have the same engineer who is an awesome engineer and person

They don't want to sell. And they could get more than that based on what 860 and, awhile back, 1190 sold for. They might get nothing since no one is buying, but 1060 alone is probably close to $5.

So what you're telling the Nurse and me is KDUS is a cash cow, even though it's the #3 Sports Parking Lot in the market. And KAZG has so much potential if only Gumpdusky could figure out how to use the assigned 52 watts at night.

Yeah, right!

I love that old Lumberyard so much that if I was stupidly foolish I'd cash in my 401K and buy it.

BTW, that 'great' engineer person never has replied to me requesting info on why they are now a daytimer.

Any guesses? Couldn't be their power bill.....or could it? ;)

It's always been a daytimer.. a lot of AM's have to go off the air, go directional, lower power at night.. been that way for decades since it was set up by the FCC. I would say the engineer does not want to reply because he does not want to. Only a few of the AM's here have a decent nighttime power level. KXEG 1280 is another one that is a nondirectional AM that has low power at night 49 watts. There will be no changes on any of these in the near future. The only way for some of these to get any power at night is to put up a more towers and is that worth it for the amount of money it takes to do that and the land required. Some daytimers got a very low power level to be on the air at night but how can you make any money with that if no one is listening if it only goes a few blocks. The only way that is effective is maybe in a very small market that the listener base lives close to the tower..

Lame.

Lumberyard 14~Forty is the ONLY daytimer left in the Valley and that's because Gumpdusky doesn't care! Does anyone really think played to death oldies on an AM daytimer is a viable format? Why do they yank the carrier at local sunset regardless of what is on the air? How come when nightime power was tried a couple of weeks ago, Gumpdusky couldn't figure out how to do a legal ID any hour they were on after sunset? And speaking of signal coverage, Nurse Jeff and I checked out their nightime signal and found it listenable 10-15 miles away from the Lumberyard. KAZG hits portions of Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa where there are plenty of warm bodies. But that really doesn't matter as all brokered stations run paid programs regardless of whether anyone is listening.

One thing's for certain: if KAZG was owned by someone who cared, it'd be on the air 24/7...even with 52 watts at night!

I care! I care!!!!!! I'll buy it from Gumpdusky. Er, well, uhhhhh.....if it's 'reasonable'

yes. Yes! YES!!!!! And played-to-death Oldies on a 24X7 would be even greater!!!

Dunno......no 'off' switch on the xmitter? Someone trips on the extension cord???

When they were pumpin' out that mighty 52 watts, I was listening with decent reception at my home north of University between Val Vista and Greenfield in Mesa. Sounded about as good as the old KCCF 1 kw at night from Cave Creek. One night I went up to the Albertson's at University and Val Vista, and discovered what a "swiss cheese" coverage pattern was like...

Still, I'd do a Cruisin' Oldies format especially at night, kind of like American Graffiti. I'm even crazy enough to suggest doing a live show Saturday nights, so the car club cruise-in at Scottsdale Pavillions and elsewhere could blare their radios while showing off!

Fun stuff 8)

Just hope they can override the lamptimer shutting the whole thing down
as it did at 7:12:20 (a few nights ago) or 7:11:56 (Friday night). And if
they do the car show remote on Saturday nights, will they have to sign off
at sunset for five minutes, then come back on with the giant 52 watts? ::)

A live DJ at the site would mean a better chance for Lumberyard 1440
to actually do legal IDs during the evening. There may even be some
radio message board geeks there whom I'm sure would go up to the DJ
when he's live on-air and say "it's almost 8:00--aren't you supposed to
say 'KAZG Scottsdale'?" ;D

;) You should go for it, landtuna! Save the 1440 from Gumpdusky! I can see good things happening with that station, if only some time, effort, and a little money went into it...

Possible great thing...landtuna? How about a segway into Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel, distributed by ABC Radio Networks (no 70's or 80's in the mix, just 50's & 60's). You can check out a live feed from one of their affiliates at www.trueoldieschannel.com Could provide consistant programming...complete with branding "True Oldies Channel 1440" and legals ID's oh boy! Could also give smaller advertisers an alternative to unaffordable KOOL-FM. Just some thoughts for the board to chew on.

I also just recently read (and I forgot where) KSLX had an open slot somewhere in the building.

I just gave trueoldieschannel a listen and it seems OK except too many commercials (both from the streaming site and from the source radio station).

For something like Classic Car Night at the Pavilions I was thinking of something more in line with Clear Channel's HD feed (just music and station ID's, no commercials). I doubt they would license it outside and would probably want too much $$$ even if they would but that would be a huge hit with the oldie car guys...and gals. There is really an opportunity for a station like Arizona Gold but I think it would take a radio-knowledgeable person to run it correctly. And it is right up there in its own back....er, lumber yard.

I can remember the engineer at 100.7 MANY years ago signing the station off on Sunday Nights - - - -"for Technical Maintenance" - - he'd usually bring in one brown bag with KFC in it and another brown bag with something in a bottle a little more potent!!!

What?...and have McDonalds downsize the live DJ who hangs his speakers atop the golden arches? Not good for the economy!

Nurse Jeff and I believe the highest and best use of Lumberyard 14~Forty is the market's 43rd Spanish language station...or it's 27th colon-blower! Is there anyone under the age of 70 that listens to music on AM anymore?

::) ::) ::) ::) KAZG El Giante Catorce~Cuarenta Noticias y Madera y Mas...Que Bueno! ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
