KAZG on the air at 6:20 a.m.!

So, is the first Radio-Info happy hour gonna be along the banks of the canal, overlooking the lumberyard?

We'll be there...just don't over serve Nurse Jeff. One wrong move and he'll be floatin' down the canal to the Tempe water plant where an untimely demise awaits him. Lumberyard 14~Forty rules, Nova M drools!

Although I don't have Friday's numbers, the usual M.O. has
continued through the weekend.

Saturday April 7:
Sign-on 0558:17, 5 kw, no ID, song JIP. TOH ID did air at 0601:45.
Sign-off 1858:11, no ID, carrier cut during song.

Sunday April 8:
Sign-on 0558:07, 5 kw, no ID, song JIP. TOH ID did air at 0600:40
(followed by public affairs program).
Sign-off 1858:03, no ID, carrier cut during song.

The lamp timer keeps drifting--by Monday morning sign-on it should
be a hair over two minutes fast.

Monday... 7:20 a.m. and nothing. I can't tell if the carrier is on or not. Can't wait to hear your comments.

All the Nurse and I can figure out is non-competitive programming justifies no audio while the carrier is on. An added benefit is Lumberyard 14~Forty doesn't burn out their oldies library as fast. Five less plays of Brown Eyed Girl means the song is only heard 3,862 times a week on Phoenix radio! And some people wonder why the Nurse and I are so fixated by this station.

The nothing you heard at 7:20 was probably the same nothing I heard
as late as 6:40 (it was carrier, BTW). Say, did they get on in time for
Nancy Pelosi's Fan Club? ;D I did hear KAZG after 4:00 with the Extra
Virgin Olive Oil Radio Network (not "heard all over Arizona").

Now the stats for Monday April 9:

Sign-on 0558:00, 5 kw, no ID, silent carrier only. When the lamp timer
kicked the XMTR on it was with a "pop...pop" sound. Usually it goes
from AM static right to whatever song is in progress (with no "pops"),
but today--no program material, just carrier.

Sign-off 1857:54, carrier cut mid-song, no ID.

Good One, Oldies fan......Extra Virgin Olive oil Radio Network. That's the kind of writing that keeps me coming back again and again.

I'm going to mention that on on the air today.

East Valley Radio Network

In today's chapter of As The Lumberyard Turns...

Sign-on 0557:51, 5 kw, no ID, song in progress. ID aired just before 0602.

Sign-off 1857:46, carrier cut mid-song, no ID.

Did Scott from the EVOO Radio Network have sarcasm mode on? ;D

Nah, Oldiesfan, I was serious. It WAS funny, and I DID mention it on air. Listen, I try to have a sense of humor about myself....this IS radio after all. In this day and age, it's hard to take too serious.

And we can thank Rachael Ray :-* for contributing to the line.

Now for today's numbers. 1.8. Oops, where did that come from?
I must have seen it somewhere...oh yeah, a conversion formula.
For +/- every one degree Celsius it's +/- 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

Actually, Wednesday's Lumberyard 1440 numbers are these:

Sign-on 0557:42, 5 kw, no ID, music JIP. ID did air at 0600:15.
Sign-off 1857:38, no ID, musicus interruptus.

I can't believe no one at Gumpdusky management reads this board.
This thread has been active now for over a month.

I figure they must have given the key to an intern from ASU......no, make that Mesa CC, and said you run it for a month. By the way, where is the studio? Anyone there?

The "studio" is probably a hard drive stuffed in a closet at the
K-Slacks edifice on Camelback Jack Road. How they get the
feed to the lumberyard is another question--STL, T1, EQed
phone line, un-EQed phone line, tin cans and string...?

As for Thursday April 12, same ol' same ol' on 1440:

Sign-on 0557:34, 5 kw, no ID, music JIP. ID aired after the
JIP song ended at 0558:45, but that's still not at sign-on.

Sign-off 1857:29, no ID, carrier cut while song-in-progress.

You'll note that the ever-drifting lamp timer is now 2:31 fast,
so now we're getting back into that grey area of KAZG coming
on beyond a reasonable sign-on announcement period--which
they don't do anyway ::) --prior to the specified 0600 for April.
Anything more than 2:00 early is probably unreasonable.

Don't all Oldies take Dial-a-Ride? ;D

Friday April 13:

Sign-on 0557:25, 5 kw, no ID, music JIP. ID stager at 0600:35.

Sign-off 1857:20, no ID, carrier cut just before the end of a jingle--
"...K-A-Z-(half a) G......buzz, crackle, static..."--which BTW did not
sound like a TOH stager. More proof that the lamp timer doesn't know
what the hard drive's doing and vice-versa. ;)

Upcoming, another Saturday morning dilemma: log the Lumberyard
sign-on or tune in Dancin' Danny Babich on the Giant 580. Wait,
I can do both, since 1440 should pop on at 0557-something and
the Dead Air Disco (heard all over Arizona) doesn't start until 0602.
The only unknown here is, will KSAZ play the same transcription
for the third week in a row?

Here is the consolidated weekend report. Hey, if McRepublic
can consolidate three sections into one for their new and
improved ::) Monday edition, I can fold two days worth of
times into one posting.

Besides, I've been quite busy crunching numbers on my 1040s.
"There's one for you, nineteen for me..."

Saturday April 14:
Sign-on 0557:17, 5 kw, no ID, music JIP. ID at 0559:45.
Sign-off 1857:12, no ID, carrier cut during song.

Sunday April 15:
Sign-on 0557:08, 5 kw, no ID, music JIP. ID at 0600:07
followed by P.A. show.
Sign-off 1857:04, no ID, carrier cut during song.

Here's one for you, Oldies Fan: The Nurse and I caught an Initial Offering for a new West Side bank in Sunday's Tribune - The 1440 Bank. Do depositers get a free 2x4 with a pound of nails?

OK, I didn't get the on/off stats for yesterday (Monday).

So I screwed up, I admit it. Feel free to slam me here on
the PHX board. Fire me from my radio job. (What radio job?)
If Jesse and Al whine, I'll send an apology to the Rutgers team.

Now with that out of the way... ;D

Tuesday April 17:
Sign-on 0556:51, 5 kw, no ID, music JIP. ID aired at 0601:55.
Sign-off 1856:46, no ID, carrier cut during song.

Hey Gumpdusky--fix your lamp timer, you're approaching illegal
in the morning (if you aren't already). And figure out how to
ID yourself at on/off, it's still in Uncle Charlie's rulebook.

Wednesday morning Nurse Jeff and I DX'ed Lumberyard 14~Forty about five miles east of the Ponderosa parking lot. At least we thought we were DXing as the modulation was running about 15% of normal. Guess someone was trying to read the common point and left the "dip modulation" button in the permanent on position!

One of these days, someone will have to document the history of 14~Forty for the Nurse and me. We know it used to be KOPA-AM and some faded sign on the xmtr building revealed KDOT. But there's got to be more, and our aural fixation with Lumberyard radio will not be satisfied until we know more!

So Akbar, let me get this straight:

KTAR running sports on FM despite splitting into two stations: "Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....no big deal"

KFYI calling themselves a Newstalk station, yet running the "news" part of a talk product an hour behind: "Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....no big deal"

And THIS thread isn't "Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....no big deal" I'm glad no one gives you a diary.

If Nurse Jeff and I got a diary, Lumberyard 14~Forty would show for the first time ever!

Faded memory banks.....

1440 AM was once KDOT (as was 100.7 FM for quite a while). This was back in the 70's. When KDOT FM got permission to increase power to 100K round about 1977 or '78, they turned into KOPA FM, which was a Top-40 station.

Somewhere about this time, the AM signal became 1440 KSGR ("Sugar Radio," I kid you not). They played a mix of oldies and standards, but did little in the ratings. After the KSGR failure, management turned 1440 into KOPA AM. Unbelievably, they had two live air staffs for each station even though the format was the same. Chris Shebel, I think, was on the AM for a while and I recall thinking he belonged on the FM side (the one with the audience).

Eventually, KOPA simulcast the FM programming probably until they flipped the FM to KSLX. I can't recall what the AM became after that, because it truly was irrelevant. I do remember they carried CNN Headline News audio for a while and simulcast some of Channel 12's newscasts for a brief time. I think they were still branded KOPA AM for many years until finally changing to KAZG.

The KOPA call letters are some of the best around, IMO. I think someone in Texas has them.
