Washington KBBO AM Yakima hit by vandals (again)

Filed today.

KBBO, Yakima, WA
(Fac. Id. 49875)
Engineering STA Request for Silent Operation

6/12/2024
On February 7, 2025, Radio Station KBBO-AM in Yakima, WA, was granted Special
Temporary Authority (STA) to operate at full daytime power and reduced power at night due to
ongoing repairs following a prior incident of vandalism. Since then, the station has operated in
compliance with the parameters authorized under that STA.

Regrettably, on June 10, 2025, KBBO-AM was the target of another significant act of vandalism,
which has rendered the station inoperable. As a result, the station is currently silent. We are in
the process of assessing the full extent of the damage, after which we will develop and
implement a plan for restoration.

At this time, the duration of silent operation remains uncertain. Accordingly, we respectfully
request authorization for Silent Operation while we work to secure the facility and carry out
necessary repairs to resume broadcasting, even at reduced power levels.

Please let us know if any additional information is needed to support this request.

Sincerely,
Tommy Gray
National Director of Engineering
Stephens Media Group

Why do I bet SMG will just turn in the license for KBBO-AM? They were off for months and months when I was still living there. The 104.5 is fed via an HD subchannel of 99.7.
No point in winning when they get about 3 listeners on the AM frequency.

I wonder if this is a case of saving money on an alarm system. Most places in America there are independent alarm companies that will "swap out" services. If the AM went off the translator should go off too. Someone should have noticed. When the AM failed it should have called someone. Ten years ago I (with the help of a middle school "geek") put the alarm system on the old Sprint cell service at a church that had had the out door part of their AC system stolen for the scrap price of the metal. Then I realized I was reinventing the the wheel because you can get that option on some systems.
