KBCS-KXOT file mutual coverage increase apps

An interesting bit of technical news from the FCC today. KBCS has asked to move to Cougar Mtn. while KXOT moves to high ground west of Bremerton.

"The proposed modification of KBCS would increase its 60dBu coverage from
1,573,337 to 2,145,681 persons - adding nearly 600-thousand potential new listeners."

For KXOT: "The population within the proposed FCC 60dBu contour of KXOT would be increased
by 360,144 - from 2,095,639, to 2,455,783.

Additionally, both stations would be at higher elevations, reducing the amount of tough terrain between their antennas and their new listeners.

Thanks for sharing something meaningful on this post for a change! This is quite interesting. I'm very impressed with the engineering paperwork filed by KXOT. They will have a bit of a hill to climb, but I think they just may pull this off w/the FCC.

As for KBCS, a move to Cougar should have been done by this station YEARS ago.....it will certainly make the station more viable, however, in the end, people do listen for the quality of programming. I just hope that this is part of the plan as well.
 
I wonder which tower KXOT will broadcast from up there on Gold Mountain?  They pretty much have 8 choices.  KCPQ-TV's tower, KTBW-TV's tower, the newer CenCom tower, a tower which looks like some sort of relay tower to get communications from east of the sound to west of the Hood Canal, and 4 other towers which I don't know what they are used for.

When I first read your post, I thought the answer was, "whichever tower has multiple FMs that share a (probably) panel antenna via a combiner." The costs of adding another station to the combiner would not be trivial but I imagine would still be less than a whole separate antenna. However, that would be the wrong answer. The proposed directional antenna pretty much HAS to be a custom design that can't be shared with another station.
 
True. That means they'd never be able to diplex with the only other FM station on Gold Mountain, which is one of those low-powered CSN religious translator stations, on 89.1 (K206DM, which only covers pretty much just Kitsap County), which I believe is on the KTBW tower.

Yep, saw that too across my computer screen this morning. Apparently the commish is accepting some interference received on each stations contour to provide for the greater good of increased pop counts. And they are significant increases in service.
 
As you'll see from the beginning of this thread, the original apps were made in2010. It was my understanding that the apps would have become invalid if not completed in three years (that's what I was told by someone at KBCS.)
So what's different about what's being proposed in 2013? Or are they taking the final step in the process, moving out of the CP phase?
 
Thanks, boiseengineer. That's what I thought, especially with the ongoing tests on 91.7. Yet in other cases I've noticed License To Cover applications when it seems like no changes are being made, just routine license renewal stuff.
So apps for License To Cover have puzzled me for a long time.
Incidentally, I'd think that it would really be stupid for both KBCS and KXOT to run HD, possibly creating enough interference to render both HD signals ineffective over wide areas, especially in vehicles.
I'd think that both stations would be cranking out the data on 91.5, limiting each other's HD coverage areas.
I've made no secret that I'd love to see all of the noise generators gone, but in this case having them would seem to be destructive to each other.
 
MPX, That is what asymmetrical sidebands are for... KBCS can legally put less power on their upper HD sidebands while KXOT can put less in their lower sidebands. IBOC radios will chose the strongest HD sideband (upper or lower) as they are designed to be independent for redundancy. IBOC does not require reception of both upper and lower sidebands at the same time to operate. Once the tuner locks on you will not notice the other station.
 
You have three years to build, once a construction permit has been granted. How long an application has been sitting there is unimportant.

Better not have dueling HD sigs. KBCS, especially in areas like West Seattle, Burien, Renton will be CREAMED by KXOT's HD. And that's not the end of it, with all these little LPFMs that are going to ruin distant FM reception.

KXOT is already creaming the analog bandwith here in Bremerton (Spill over on 91.3, 91.5, and 91.9). I don't think even KBCS' HD will ever make it here!
 
Regardless of how well the HD's perform in their and other coverage areas, KBCS and KXOT will make a mess of things for surrounding stations. I'd think that a bit of KROH's coverage will be minimized, as well as the Calvary Chapel 91.9 translator (which I realize is a secondary service.)
Most people don't own selective radios, so for them HD on the band just makes FM ever noisier, with the noise making listening less pleasant. And with little to show for it.
