KBEC MIKE O'DANIEL

The search for veteran North Texas broadcaster Mike O'Daniel was scheduled to continue Sunday at Richland Chambers Lake.

Police said O'Daniel apparently fell overboard from a boat on Saturday and has not been seen since.

He does not know how to swim.

O'Daniel is well known in Ellis County as the co-host of the Classic Country Coffee Cup morning program on KBEC.

He also was recognized for teaching actor Robert Duvall how to play guitar for the 1983 movie "Tender Mercies," which was filmed in and around Waxahachie.

Very sad to hear that. I monitored KBEC on their stream as much as I could this morning, and they did a very nice tribute to Mike. You could tell it was a somber atmosphere around the station there. It wasn't that long ago that they lost both Richard Tuck (owner) and his wife, "Miss Faye," too. Steve, please keep us all posted on the arrangements.

Checking the web, it looks like there's a connection between Mike and "Pappy" Lee O'Daniel, former Texas governor who put together the Light Crust Doughboys way back when. Anyone know about that?

"Pappy" Lee O'Daniel made a last run for the governor's office in the mid '50s. I suppose a very young Mike could have been involved with that.
