KBEC

The story got buried over with newer news, so here's the quote. Credited to www.****************:

"Local businessman Jim Phillips has agreed to purchase Classic Country KBEC-AM (1390) licensed to Waxahachie, TX, for $1.25 million. The seller consists of three individuals: Jeanne Mosley, Sandra Howell and Ken Roberts. KBEC is a fulltime station broadcasting with 500 watts day and 260 watts night."

Observations: Richard and Faye Tuck are either rolling in their graves right now (after starting the station and keeping it in the family for over 55 years,) OR they might say to their daughter/owner, "$1.25 MILLION??? OMG...GRAB IT AND RUN!!" Really, for a station that barely covers Ellis County, and looks to be landlocked for any possible upgrades, $1.25 million is an insane price. KAND went for, what, 1/10th of that? And the KRVA/KRVF-FM combo went for less that a mil, and back before the bubble really burst for radio stations?

Could be a misprint. $125,000 would make more sense.

More importantly, will the sale affect the "Sunday Morning Polka Show"? That's been a fixture on KBEC since 1964.

I just looked in the FCC database and yes it's $1.25 million.....I'm not familiar with the area or station but for a 500 watt station WOW

I don't think it's about upgrading or moving it -- it may be about a long history of community service and having lots of local advertisers. The guy buying it is a local businessman who may have no interest in moving it (if it could be moved).

When I listen to KBEC I hear a lot of local spots and they are located in a county with 150,000 people with very little local competition.

Granted $1.25 million IS a lot for a 500-watt AM, but KBEC isn't just "any" AM -- it may be a cash cow for all we know (at least for now.)

It is an insane price, but I do know when I was consulting it a few years ago, we had it topping out at over $60K in revenue per month. I don't think it is there today, but it has done well in the past.

Like they always say, if someone is willing to pay a certain price, then that price IS what it's worth!

The Tucks had been trying to sell it for some time, fyi.

The real estate in this package represents almost 50% of the $1.25M. 5200 sq.ft. income producing building and over 16 acres of land.

If it was billing 60k a month then you don't need to do anything with it just keep it like it is. I looked at their web site . It looks like a good community radio station.

Like Steve said that deal includes their former station property (where the transmitter still sits I beleive) which is prime frontage on I-35E just south of 287....in addition to their near downtown studios.

It's a good community station and if it continues to be run well can be a nice little cash-generator.

Don't know what operating costs are, but if the buyer was able to pay cash, he could likely recoup his investment in under five years.

The tower hasn't been at 35/287 for some time. When they got night-time authorization the tower site moved to somewhere north of the Hatch.

When did they get night-time authorization? They were daytime only on the 70s as I recall. Also recall seeing their tower site off of 35 in the 70s.

They moved to their present location and added nighttime service in 1993.

You're welcome. Also (and maybe somebody can confirm this) I believe KBEC had post-sunset authority from the old site, back in the late 1980's and likely until they moved to the present site. Just how much power they ran I couldn't say, but it was probably considerably less than a hundred watts. That PSSA would have allowed them to operate until two hours past local sunset.

KBEC ran 65 watts at night (and would stay on the air until midnight Mon-Sat) from the old two-tower array at 35E & 287 until the new array was built (just off FM 813 northeast of Waxahachie) in the summer of 1991.

Thanks for the info on that. I remember hearing them (on a barefoot Panasonic RF2800) in Bedford back in 1989. The signal was really trashy, but it was definitely KBEC. Midnight, huh? They kinda bent that PSSA!

If I were the new guys that will own it, I'd seriously look for a fm translator for the area and add that to their loan as that's some insurance their investment won't be obsoleted as soon.

That's assuming that someone with an existing translator would be willing to part with it so it could be moved into the Waxahachie area, providing an available frequency could be found. It's highly doubtful.

They Could Probably get one on 95.5,
I'm sure the owners of the 97.5 translator
would not mind at all getting rid of that useless thing.

it could be moved to 95.5 (a minor change) and moved in steps to Waxahachie
