KBFX PD out

The job is posted on All Access currently. That's been a long time comin' - that station has all the unrealized potential in the world, I hope they hire someone that gets the format and executes it correctly.

**In other rock news - Porno Brad's the new PD at KWHL, and X-Rock is looking for an APD/Morning Host. Wow, if you want to work in rock radio in Anchorage, the world is your oyster, it would seem!

Wow good for them at KBFX. I agree they have so much potential but haven't done much with it lately. I'm fairly new to the area but it seems they've just been repeating a lot of Woody & Wilcox clips over and over again (I'm not all that crazy about that team the first time around) and then just follow a playlist the rest of the day. The music is pretty good but I could get the same tracks off my ipod and without the commercials, so there's not much reason to go out of my way to tune in. Something else needs to be done over there soon. I hear they were #1 once so it can be done. I wish them luck.

Well - they haven't been #1 since they had Bob and Mark, they hadn't been #1 for a long time since then. With 20 some odd signals on the air in Anchorage, I doubt a classic rock could be #1 without a real strong morning product. W&W are decent, the only reason they don't 'kick ass' in this town is because Bob and Mark have been here for years and have been #1 for most of that time, I don't think Anchorage rock listeners for the most part are even giving them a chance, just like they didn't give Glenner and Jerry a chance (see their 8 month run in Anchorage for more details). They're the home team, and they do a fine job, it'll be sad when those two hang it up for good.

Also, the market for classic rock has changed, you have Bob which dabbles in a bit of everything, X-Rock which is probaly 70/30 classic rock to new rock, KOOL which has transitioned to classic hits within the last 2 years, Fox, and of course KWHL, who's flirted with the classics forever it seems. The market is too fragmented for stations that play Sweet Home Alabama! Not to say that KBFX couldn't be successful again, but I think it might be time to do something different. That's a toughy, as you have 3 other rock stations on the air, would you WANT to do something rock-based again?

Maybe Clear Channel will bring their canned La Preciosa Spanish format up...haha. OK, they won't do that, but it'll be interesting to see what happens.

I was so surprised how overdone the dial was when I got here last year. I've been listening a lot recently to 90.3, mainly just for a change of pace. Odd mix of songs sometimes but late at night it's pretty good. You're right, going up against two or three other rock stations isn't easy, and trying something else may be their only option. I just can't think of what else could work here. Sports radio, which works well back east even on FM, would bomb. They mentioned on the news last night about the Anchorage population getting older by the day, so perhaps sometime in the future someone tries a format geared towards them (Swing and Big Bands, 40's and 50's, Elvis, etc). It's a risk, sure, since that age group is so big on AM news/talk. Spanish might work here with the growing Hispanic poulation.
