KBKS 106.1 Morning Show Stunt?

So, has anyone been listening to the Jackie and Bender 106.1 (KBKS) morning show today (10/6)? They were supposed to give away $10,000 during the 7 AM hour and when they went to get the cash, the money was missing from the boss's safe and just a "roses are red..." note remained. All of the hosts and crew played the blame game all morning until the boss cut the show off and they went to commercials and looping the same music over and over. Now this sounds straight up like a radio stunt to me but now they've got lawyers (supposedly) there (and in the studio) and it sounds as though it is getting serious. I'm leaning toward it being a stunt (elaborate, yes) but I am curious to hear what others think (if you're one of the few that listens to this morning show...)

It is a stunt that has been done in other markets before. Do you think anything believes they are talented enough to create something like this on their own?

And how many radio stations do you suppose really have a safe? Let alone with 10-grand in it?

But when it comes down to it, does it really matter whether it's a stunt or not, if it gets the listeners actively involved, calling in to the station, listening to see what the latest update is?

In my mind it makes it fun! Sure, those of us who are "radio-philes" will see it as a stunt, but it's still fun to listen to.
 
Why would the station keep $10,000 in a safe when that prize money could be drawing interest in a bank? I smell stunt.
 
...am pretty sure this is a spin on the old "we apologize for what our morning show said today" campaign idea. That is where stations would usually buy TV time (way in advance) and run a simply-produced text crawl with the apology (matching the voice-over) that admonishes their morning show for being so out-of-line on the show that day. Sometimes the talent goes off air for a day or two to make it look like a suspension kicked in .... and meanwhile the people who love to drive by accidents flock to the station to find out what the heck they missed if the controversy is that huge. The people who actually listened assumed they missed the offending bit (because in most cases there WAS nothing ever aired that was offensive ... just the apologies made all over town) ... and the whole results in people sampling the station.

SOMETIMES the buzz pays off and people stay hooked long enough for some kind of measurable result -- but in the end it's usually a promotion that doesn't cost that much to execute. The grey area here would be if there was a contest run with a prize promised and they never FAIRLY finish the contest --- those things tend to upset people who browse lots of legal stuff; so I'm sure they'll find a way to make the gag "pay off" fairly when the publicity value has slowed down.
 
They will probably launch into the Kiss 106.1 $10,000 fugutive game... It's been done in a lot of markets. In my opinion...If they are going that route, it will have a very small market feel, but people may get into it.

I do find it comical though that on their website yesterday, I stumbled across one of the hosts blogs that had comments from listeners yesterday calling BS on it, as well as the URL the station has created to start up this "fugitve" stunt. All of those posts have been quickly deleted this morning, in my opinion a tad too late since the majority of listeners who quickly visited their website yesterday saw that this was all made up.

But aren't there penalties for early withdrawal at some banks? Besides, banks have to report transactions of $10,000 or more to the FBI (a by-law in our nation's triumphant drug war.) The IRS gets tipped off about transactions those big too....
