KBLA deal on again?

And those Gremli (plural of Gremlin, right?) had hi-fi AM radios that went all the way up to 1580 so they could listen to KTUF with that 50 kw transmitter that sometimes they forgot to turn off at sunset.
Ol Buck Owens paid a lot to make 15~Eighty a full timer. Six sticks and 50kw at night. 50kw non-D during the day. Didn't move the needle. Today the frequency is one of many Sports Parking lots in the Valley with 24kw day, 245w at night and two translators. Must be making money as the carrier is still on.

Now back to our regular discussion already in progress....

ive often wondered if this KBLA deal and him continuing to try and buy the albatross hanging around his neck has anything to do with making himself look better after sexual misconduct allegations at PBS, him going on tour to defend himself, suing NPR, him being counter sued and losing.

Maybe a part of the reason hes doing this.. if hes fit to be a licensee of a station, then hes fit for a big job in the future. And when he is a licensee, hes doing this for social justice reasons, that makes him look real good to future employers as well.

I mean, if Jack Barry can buy a radio station after the game show cheating/fixing scandal from more than 50 years ago, to prove if hes fit to be a licensee, he should be fit to be hired for a big network job....... Tavis could do it too.

The other side of it is he can't get hired by the big companies because of his past, so this is his only way to work. Nobody can fire him here.

good point.. i think hes hedging his bets and probably has both on his mind here

Once I called the request line and told the jock he had forgotten to turn off the AM at sunset. "Why do you care?" "Well, I like listening to the Sonora station at night and you are blocking it". "Oh, you are one of those..." Hung up, but the signal was gone in about 30 seconds!

Meanwhile, the XEDM 1580 at full power of 50 kw broadcasting live baseball games of the Mexican Pacific League with the voice of the famous announcer Mr. Fausto Soto Silva

It was very common in communities far from Hermosillo to complain about the interference produced by KTUF 1580 in Phoenix, mainly by baseball fans who followed the narrations of the games at night by the local team called Narajeros. It was common in areas such as Cananea, Caborca, Magdalena and Nogales. The "gringos" didn't let me listen to baseball the XEDM

I was living in Scottsdale at the time and attending ASU while doing consulting. And I was an AM DXer... who noted KTUF on often after sunset.

Sounds like that was during the KTUF/KNIX simulcast days, when the AM was sort of an afterthought. I remember the dual call letter jingle…wonder why they didn’t have the same call on both at the time?

Tavis Smiley has renewed his LMA for KBLA

So they are giving him 3 more months to come up with the $6.9 million? Awfully accommodating of them. How many more months do they give him when he doesn't have the cash then? It's not like they have a bunch of other prospective suckers, err, buyers to turn to.

How long does the whole charade go on?

It's not like they have a bunch of other prospective suckers, err, buyers to turn to.

According to the article in the OP, he's been paying them $50,000 a month for the last few years. But yes, they really don't have any better options. They can sue him or keep collecting checks. It's cheaper to keep collecting checks.

Could the lma's continue because thats considered opex and buying would be capex.. .and are two seperate budgets, most likely? Even if KBLA isnt making much money. .and i cant imagine it is?

I've learned some stuff about cap ex vs op ex budgets as i deal with phone company nonsense up here

So he’ll be paying it off until he’s around 70.

FCC rejected the objection by the Ukrainian Congress Committee to block Multicultural Radio Broadcasting's license renewal application. Station now licensed to the end of 2029.

The Tavis Smiley deal to acquire 1580 had been put on hold at the FCC because of that objection and he has been operating the station under a LMA all this time. So apparently this starts the clock ticking again, with a slightly lower purchase price than four years ago ($6.89 million vs. $7.15 million).
Does anyone know what was the reason for the objection?

Yes, as has been discussed elsewhere, MRBI leased time, through an intermediary.. to RT Radio in the USA, the stateside version of RT in russia... on a station in DC
