KBLA

KBLA's BIN affliation is different from those of the iHeartMedia-owned affiliates in that KBLA is airing just the 60-second newscasts at the top and bottom of each hour while maintaining a schedule of its own programs.

Unfortunately same pattern. In my neck of the woods in the southwest SFV 1580's daytime ERP is less than 1000 watts. The actual measured voltage (less than .5mv) is just slightly higher than KYPA 1230. Night pattern is more favorable in my direction and 1580 measures on average better than 2mV, but being about 30 miles out from the transmitter there is severe selective fading distortion due to the collision of the ground wave with the length of the Santa Monica Mountains combined with some sky wave signal. (Reception is a mess) . Although not long ago it was worse - it had Hermosillo and Phoenix to contend with but not any more.
1580 is weak in the western San Fernando Valley so they don't interfere with a 5kw station on 1590 AM in Ventura.

And anywhere to the south and southeast it is severely nulled to protect the Mexican border. While the station in Hermosillo is gone, 1580 is a Mexican (and Canadian) clear channel and any US station must protect both borders. That means little to the north and northeast, and none to the southern US border.

Will KBLA impact KFI?
Unlikely. Philosophically and ethnically, the two formats target different listener groups.

Add to that the fact that KBLA has a rather limited signal (which does cover well the HDBA areas of LA) while KFI has one that covers at least parts of four additional separate Nielsen metros as well as all of LA's MSA day and night; KFI has a 10 mV/m signal over more than twice as many people as KBLA does.

That does not mean that KBLA is going to fail. It is targeting predominantly Black listeners who didn't have a talk station representing their particular concerns. There are over 800,000 African Americans in LA and this station has the potential to be a powerful and successful voice for them.

A 90 day extension was filed 4/06/21. Bet there's some kind of LMA in effect if the sale hasn't closed.

Tavis Smiley just did a live shot on KTLA. Using a computer monitor for a mic. Sounded terrible. Step up to the game, Mr. Smiley, I would not have aired that poor quality sound on our LPFM for a 10 second news actuality.

Tavis is obviously on a media tour, doing interviews with a lot of outlets today. In his chat with Inside Radio, he says he wants to create a network of talk stations:

Here's another article from RadioInk that quotes the LA Standard interview:

KBLA has filed for a second EXTENSION OF CONSUMMATION of the sale from MULTICULTURAL RADIO BROADCASTING LICENSEE, LLC.
Applied for an SBA loan. The filing anticipates a closing on the sale in August. But the fine print doesn't specify a year!

Applied for an SBA loan.

I was led to believe the SBA doesn't loan money for radio stations. Perhaps there are exceptions for minorities.

Or perhaps the loan is for a minority business that just happens to also own a radio station.

However it happened, it might be instructive for other minorities interested in buying media.

This morning, I heard Tavis Smiley say his guest on the first hour of his Monday 8/9/21 show will be Larry Elder.
Looking forward to it!
