KBLX editing of songs

Back when KBLX the "quiet storm" station, there probably wasn't too much editing of lyrics required, other than a song possibly being a bit too risque about love. But adding rap as was done in 2021 requires more care to tone down lyrics.

On Saturday, KBLX played Tupac's "How Do U Want It". On Spotify there are two "clean" versions - one from the All Eyez On Me album that scrambles out the swear words from the original recording. But four months after the album release, Tupac did re-record the song changing lyrics wholesale for MTV and radio, and that is available on his posthumous Greatest Hits compilation.

KBLX played the "alternate lyrics" version of "How Do U Want It" but with MORE censorship than the version I've heard for years on Wild 94.9 and KMEL. Specifically, KBLX's version cut references to alcohol, sex, or strip clubs. However, it kept the violent references, like "how to get a bulletproof".

But on Friday, KBLX was playing Bone-Thugs-n-Harmony's "Thuggish Ruggish Bone". The song didn't include any swear words, but MTV and most radio stations, including 94.9 and now 102 Jams, usually play a re-recorded version toning down the lyrics to remove talk about weapons and fighting. However, KBLX played the regular album version - I had just tuned in when I caught the "try to creep and get beat" rather than "99 is my street" (a reference to East 99th Street in the Bone Thugs' hood in East Cleveland).

One possible reason for the way the Tupac song was edited: KBLX is now owned by Bonneville, a corporation owned by the LDS Church. Alcohol is forbidden in the LDS religion. That reminds me: I'll need to check if KBLX edits Jagged Edge's "Where the Party At" to remove "Bacardi" from the chorus, or even allows "Blame It" by Jamie Foxx featuring T-Pain (a song that name drops multiple drink brands in the chorus).

Shorter KBLX/Bonneville: "Fighting is cool, fornication not cool."

I have never understood Bonneville's rules when it comes to music edits.

Bonneville owned a Classic Hits station in Phoenix in the mid-90s, and then another one when they acquired stations from Emmis in 2004.

In 1996, they wouldn't even touch the single version of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side." And that's not at all surprising, given the subject of the song (which is just more explicit on the album version).

In 2005, they played it, and the only edit they made in addition to the original single was cutting out the phrase "And the colored girls go", so the voices just come in with the "doo doo doo..."

So this afternoon I was listening to KBLX (admittedly during the fourth quarter of the 49ers game).

KBLX played the regular clean version of Tupac's "Changes" that obscures profanity and drug references. But KBLX didn't edit out the lyrics about suicide, gun use, or fighting. And a mix show included the original version (not the "safe for MTV" re-recording) of Bone Thugs' "Thuggish Ruggish Bone".

This decision was probably made with sensitivity to the LDS Church's history of institutional racism.

Back on topic - I tuned into KBLX a couple times today.

Amazingly, they managed to play Ginuwine's "Pony" - apparently the management didn't realize that song is not about literal horseback riding.

Then around 9 they played Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" during a DJ mix. The first two lines were completely cut out, likely due to alcohol ("Drop ya glasses") and another verse about "hot flashes". Next in the mix was Bay Area rap classic "I Got 5 On It" - I caught them muting out "Hennessy, Seagrams, or Gordons" from one line. I wasn't able to catch the song in its entirety, but the entire song is about smoking weed, so I'd imagine a Bonneville station trying to play that song would be the audio equivalent of "The Sopranos on PAX TV".

Speaking of drinks, I've heard Total Wine & More advertise on other Bay Area stations. I'm pretty certain I won't hear their ads on KBLX anytime soon.

How much of this could *possibly* be that those in 'church circles' that are making these types of editing decisions are unaware of some of the pervasive use of innuendo or other African-American Vernacular English words/phrases?

When someone complains about how the songs are edited:

"African-American Vernacular English" :ROFLMAO:

You can tell who people grew up around when they use phrases like that. Hilarious
...or, somebody with enough active and (mostly) functioning brain cells to actually post the proper term for the form of language for others to laugh and point at.

:cautious:

Listening to KBLX's 8am DJ mix today, I did catch them playing two surprising choices of songs: "OPP" from Naughty by Nature, and "Too Close" by Next.

Neither song had any lyrics edited out - even though both are extended metaphors for subject matter that would normally be forbidden by Bonneville. Did Standards & Practices really listen to "Too Close" and think "you're making it hard for me" meant "difficult" or "challenging"?
