KBOX dead for 30 years today

Len was a nice guy and I've known Chuck for 20 years. Chuck's another great guy and he's carrying on the tradition of home town broadcasting at "The Pick of The Dial - 1570 KPKE"

R.I.P. Len.

And so long to "Wonderful K-BOX In Dallas"

I had the great pleasure of working with Len Mohnkern when he first started at the old KBOX. I used to pull the weekend all-night shows to give you an idea of my talent level, but Len was great. Wonderful to hear his voice again, plus see that 1480 is back on-the-air after a long absence.

KBOX was the first station I worked at in Dallas. Jack Weston hired me in January 1980 to do 7-midnight. Lots of great memories working with Allen Peck, Peggy Sears, Ken Loomis, Ron Gray, Bobby Dark, Mac Daniels. Cathy Martindale. Great jocks! And a great news staff, too. Rick Fulghem, Jay Ward, Ross Ramsey. And Len was not only a great newsman, but a wonderful gentleman.

BTW.....anyone remember the schrubbery out front that had been trimmed to spell K B O X?

I do. I was a kid and made a crystal radio set with my dad. One of the few stations I could get at the time was KBOX. My mother was driving us somewhere one afternoon and we drove right by the KBOX studios. I distinctly remember the shrubs and the sign and thinking to myself.. that's where the DJ's are when I hear them on my radio. I was probably 7 or 8 at the time. (that was late 70's) So everytime I hear the station after that, I had a mental image of where the broadcast was coming from.
