KBPA 103.5 upgrading signal?

I read on Bob FM's website that if anyone has noticed static recently on Bob, like I did, its because they are in the process (as of 7/27) of installing a "new and improved broadcast antenna." It also says the process should take about 2 weeks, and we will be able to hear Bob FM in places we couldn't hear it before....

Does anybody know about this? Are they moving the stick closer to Austin, or are they upgrading their ERP? Has this change happened already? Any info is appreciated.

Their HD Signal has been off for a while now. I didn't know what was going on.

We are replacing the original antenna at the top of the tower which had been there since the early/mid 80's. If my timeline is correct, that is the same antenna that signed 103.5 on the air as KEYI when it upgraded from the original site just the other side of I35 as 103.7 KCSW. (I bet Fred Cantu can help with my timeline)

It shouldn't be more than a few more days until everything is done. And if you are radio-geeky like me, in a few weeks I hope to be able to post some pictures on the BOB FM website of the process. The old antenna was a monster, and pretty cool to see come down.

I don't think so. The antenna at the Buda site was put up so that 103.5 and 94.7 could be combined there. 103.5 has used it exclusively since 94.7 moved to the "finger" when ARS owned it.

That makes sense, guess the tower itself was put up in the early 80's for the 103.7 to 103.5 upgrade. But the antenna was probably replaced in '87 for the launch of Capital 94.7. Ah, a station that played Jody Watley into George Strait - how strange ;)

I worked at KTXZ-AM "K-Tejas" at the time... and our playlist included George Strait, Jody Watley and Little Joe y La Familia. Maybe we were inspired by the legendary KOKE-FM where I recall once hearing a set that included Jan & Dean, Led Zepellin and Dolly Parton.

i remember capital 94.7 back then and 95.5 koke-fm sterling country. then 95.5 then changed in 1982 or 1983 to what is it now. lets see the other 94.7's capital, kat (country), froggy (oldies), party (pop)and mix.(hot ac) when it comes to 103.5, it seems i remember the call letters kcsw (not sure about the music they played at the time), key 103, oldies 103. bob 103

KOKE-FM was Progressive Country "Super Roper Radio" in the 1970s.

And IIRC KAPT was also beautiful music at some point in the mid 80s after EZ102 became Classic Rock Z102.

When I came to Austin to stay, KCSW was a soft AC with live jocks 24/7 and hourly local news.

I worked in there in 1980. As I recall, we staffed the KNOW/KCSW newsroom 5am to midnight daily. I believe we had 10 people in the newsroom as did KVET/KASE and KLBJ-AM/FM.

Well... I hope Bob FM goes full power with its new antenna really really soon, because this current signal sucks! My car radio was not even DXing the station in Georgetown earlier today. And it kept going in and out. Its frustrating, when your an avid listener.

The current tower has been on since 1983, which was when the move was made from 103.7 to 103.5. The station had been KEYI for a couple of years at the time.

KCSW ran from 1976-81, with an easy listening/extremely lite AC format...almost but not quite elevator music.

Longtime listeners remember the original KRMH, 1971-76.

This was the predecessor of today's soft rock/less talk formats. KASE was still beautiful music at the time. Right around 1981, KASE went Continuous Country and KCSW became AC KEY 103 after wooing morning DJ Dave Jarrott away from Top 40 K98 KHFI. I believe that's also when Spanish KMXX became beautiful music EZ102 KPEZ.

Yes, the installation is complete and as of this morning we are at full power on the new antenna. South of the river you probably won't notice a difference - however in Northern Travis and Williamson Counties building penetration is much improved.

Hey Krash, now that Austin is a top 40 market will Bob ever go back to using Howard Cogan for the imaging? He's better for this format.

WOW... Now I noticed. I was in downtown San Antonio at Rivercenter Mall crockett street parking garage today. My car radio was DXing 103.5. This was cool, because its never DXed as far as downtown SA before. :D
