KBPK-FM Buena Park

this FCC cancellation had to do with a construction permit application NOT the original license. License to cover is what was canceled. I would kindly advise members not to jump to conclusions merely on an FCC administrative decision and wait until official confirmation (in this case from the college)

There was no construction permit outstanding for KBPK. The way license cancellation is handled in CDBS is that you file to cancel the most recent license, which is exactly what was done here.

KBPK-FM Buena park has returned their license to the FCC. They have been on the since about 1977.
KBPK went on the air in 1970 as a station operated by the Buena Park School District. In 1972 they started sharing the frequency remotely with Fullerton College, and by Fall of 1978 the Fullerton College radio program started broadcasting full-time on KBPK. I am checking to find out how this happened. VERY disappointing to those of us who spent time there as students in the radio program and as radio faculty at Fullerton College. It was a great training ground that produced many top-notch broadcasters.

Signal-wise, I've always wondered how KCRW was allowed to upgrade its signal (in the early 1980s, IIRC) with KBPK already on an adjacent channel within KCRW's new Grade A coverage. KBPK must have suffered from a lot of new interference when KCRW's stick moved way up in elevation, from Santa Monica to KYSR's tower atop the Hollywood Hills.

Jim Bain ran a very good program there. I've hired more than 1 alum of KBPK. Sad day for the little station that served as a great training ground for so many students.

From what I see, Fullerton College had a staffer who was KBPK program director. The college still offers radio among its degrees. I imagine they were offered the opportunity to buy or take over the license, and they declined. Some colleges that sell their broadcast station continue the programming in an online capacity. That way they save money on the transmitter, but they have to pay additional fees for the music.
