KBPO is hammered with a $25,000 fine

Stan, I'm guessing there's no "main studio" at KOLE (Beaumont-Pt Arthur)? Or is there one?

I haven't been down that way in a while..what is KOLE programming on the air these days?

Also, is 990-AM Beaumont still silent?

KOLE had been in the old KLVI studios on Sawyer but when they were sold to Birach I heard they had to move - I'm not sure where they wound up.

KZZB 990 is still silent, although I swear I heard something on that frequency when I was driving in north Beaumont one day. If they are broadcasting, the signal and sound is very weak and poor quality.

I noticed $15k of the KBPO fine was due to a staffer REFUSING to cough up the public file. I take it the staff was not advised how to deal with Uncle Charlie whenever he visits.

The real surprise here is that the FCC inspectors are usually pretty reasonable and fair when it comes to their inspections, and these guys still screwed it up. I've found, "I'm just an announcer; the GM's out for lunch. He'll take care of you in a little bit. Can I get you something while you wait?", was an acceptable answer at the one FCC inspection that happened when I was present. As I understand it, the FCC gave KBPO three chances to show them their PI file. With most FCC inspectors, you really have to go out of your way to get a violation that big!

That's a pretty simple request to screw up. In the course of my career, I've gone in to 4 stations asking to see their public file for various business reasons and it's always been no problem at all.

I work for a pretty large company, and while the NYC office was being moved the FCC showed up looking for the file, not a problem, but in the move one component of the file, the empty folder marked requests for time from political candidates was missing and the FCC nailed the station to the cross for it. It didn't matter we were in the middle of a big move, didn't matter that we had never had a request for time, just some revenue producing BS from the Government.

They can't shut down pirate operators, but they have time to go do public inspection file detective work.

Then there are those pesky "voluntary" EAS records.

My GM makes sure our paperwork is PERFECT, every I is dotted, every T is crossed.

Update on AM 990 in Beaumont - back on the air with poor audio quality and almost no signal. Why do they even bother?

Agreed, hasn't it been that way for about the last ten years or so?
