KBRT to leave Catalina Island

A little item in Inside Radio about KBRT moving its TX site off of Catalina Island. To which, I might add, the residents of Avalon are saying, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out."

According to the Crawford newsletter they're setting up shop in Anaheim.

I'm still a bit surprised that the blame for the Catalina fire is still being placed on Crawford and not the contractor who caused the damage.

I recall reading past postings that reveal a distaste for this Christian radio broadcaster. You can call it "selective memory", "hate speech" or what-have-you.

Thanks for continually correcting the record. BTW, I don't work for Crawford.

More specifically it is the Santa Ana Mountains area which is just east of Anaheim and Santa Ana.

From the newsletter:

"New transmitter site for KBRT – we are in the early stages of developing a 27-acre piece of land in the Santa Ana Mountains of
Orange County, dealing with electrical power, NEPA, NPA, FAA, FCC, Forest Service, Orange County Zoning, O.C. Planning and many other agencies and jurisdictions."

Eduardo: there a couple of issues at work here: Crawford's/KBRT's response to the fire or lack thereof (no apology, offer of compensation or concern for the residents of Avalon--just silence) and there is still some question as to whether Crawford/KBRT adequately cleared the brush from their site. As a result, the residents don't seem to be that interested or charitable in differentiating between Crawford and the contractor.

Still nothing in the FCC data base. I won't believe any of it until the request appears formally in the FCC data base.

I remember before the transmitter for 830 AM was moved to the Chino Hills/Norco/Corona area, 830 AM's transmitter was in that remote area.

Given that AM needs a large, flat area to transmit from the Santa Ana Mts. seems a strange location for the move. But 27 acres is a lot of land so it will be interesting to see how they grade it and make it work.

Just look at the 1190 transmitter site off the 57 freeway.

Or 870 off the 2 freeway. One of the "towers" is actually a piece of wire dropped from one of the guys to ground, where there is an ATU.

Admittedly, I have a low opinion of Crawford but to be fair this move to the mainland will be good for KBRT, soured community relations notwithstanding. According to their newsletters, the engineer on Catalina had reported chronic telecommunication problems as well as power surges--problems that will undoubtedly be mitigated when they move to the Santa Ana Mts.

If Crawford need 27-acres then they're probably looking to build a fairly elaborate antenna system. This won't be an inexpensive move for them.

Speaking of Catalina Island... do any LA radio stations reach that area? Radio-Locator only shows a few FMs reaching that area with a poor signal.

Since it is an over water path, as long as you are on the side of the island that faces LA, getting FM from Mt. Wilson is not an issue. The LA FM's on Mt. Wilson make to Ensenada.

Avalon now has a 100 watt Educational FM, which is how 92.7 moved away-they claimed the non com is a remaining service.

That would be KISL-FM with studios down the street from the passenger boat terminal.

So....since KBRT 740 is moving their transmitter away from Catalina Island. Will 760 KFMB able to raise their daytime power to 50,000 watts from 5,000 watts?

I hope this TX move will not interfere with KCBS at night.

Unless KBRT is getting nighttime authorization along with the TX site change, it's not an issue as they have to sign off at sunset.

I believe KBRT is allowed 113w at night but at the moment choose not to use it as the wattage cannot make it across the channel.
