KBRT

KBRT filed an app. today to change it's city of license to Costa Mesa. Work on the CP to increase power to 50kw days and 190 watts nights at the new transmitter site near Corona should be complete by late December.

Haven't they tried this before? It doesn't matter where they put that new transmitter, or how localized they try and make the nighttime signal, it will still sound like a mess after sundown.

No they just have to power down... However, during the last week, and a few months ago, they left the daytime power on at night and I heard the word of the lord overpowering (pun INTENDED) KCBS. Would love the FCC to bust them just for shitz and grins....lol.

Happens to the best of stations from time to time. I'm certain it was not intentional, a by-product of unattended operation and leaving the after-hours operation in the hands of Microsoft. It's only going to get worse as Obamacare kicks in and forces stations to terminate their part-time staff members because the cost to provide them with healthcare bennies will far exceed their pay.

I don't know any company (apart from Starbucks) that provides health care benefits to part-time staff members anyway. Certainly not in broadcasting. And that's nothing new.

You're right, this was almost certainly not intentional. Crawford isn't cheap about engineering and my understanding is that they are pretty strict about following the rules. They have full-time engineer at KBRT who is constantly traveling back and forth to the Island. It's quite a commute.

I get that "dagrudt" doesn't like the station or programming, but wouldn't it be better for the FCC to go after the pirates who are intentionally broadcasting without a license or the daytimers who have been running full-power around-the-clock for years rather than a legitimate, but remote, operation that likely just had an equipment failure?

Well, that's just it... the new plan, when it fully kicks in, requires employers to provide part-time employees and their dependents with health care benefits. I don't know about Starbucks, but a lot of radio stations simply can't afford that. Like I said, the cost of the benefits would far exceed their wages. Which means more automation and fewer people. It's bad enough as it is. Hate to see it get worse.

I will never forget Gov. Romney complimenting Israel on their national (socialized) health plan that costs their country only 8 % of GNP as opposed to ours at 18 %. As anybody who has ever needed medical treatment under socialized Canadian medicine knows, the system works smoothly and efficiently. It would be a great boon to ALL businesses if the burden of paying our inflated US health care premiums were lifted from them. Don't hold your breath.

KBRT is supposed to power down to protect 760 KFMB in San Diego as well. I wish KBRT would go away its a terrible excuse for a religious group, and their employees are jerks! Crawford is like the Cumulus of religion

While 760 may be a protection requirement for the CP, KBIG, now KBRT, went on the air on 740 in the early 50's long before KFMB moved to 760. Its protection issues involved KCBS, not 760. When KFMB was forced to move to accommodate an amendment to the NARBA treaty, it was sort of shoehorned in because it had to leave 540; nobody had filed for 760 before because such an application would likely not even have been accepted for filing.

Crawford, by the way, has some wonderful engineers. The company supports them significantly and they even have an open-to-the-world engineering newsletter which is often referred to by other engineering blogs or newsletters, such as Gonsett and SBE chapters. Calling their employees "jerks" is wrong, uncalled for and misanthropic.

KBRT does not protect KFMB at night and never has.

Crawford is a first-rate company, a family business that has been around since the late 1950s with good, Christian values. From everything I have seen and all I have talked to, it treats its employees well and provides them with the best in equipment and facilities to do their jobs.

If you have some specifics as to who at Crawford is a "jerk" and why, I'm sure we would all love to hear it. While anyone can act like a jerk on occasion, I would find it very enlightening to know what qualifies all Crawford employees to be characterized as jerks.
