Hello everyone. An odd question for you. Maybe someone in sales or promotions might help me out.

In April of 2005 my girlfriend was listening to KBSG and they announced they were giving away a trip to Laughton, Nevada that included airfare and a 3 night stay at a hotel down there. She called. She won. A few days later she received the information in the mail from KBSG. The certificate was good until January 2006. The packet contained all the information needed including a letter from the hotel in Laughton that advised her to watch their website for the dates the chartered planes flew out of Seattle.

It is now 9 months later. There still has been absolutely no flights chartered from Seattle to Laughton Nevada. A few months ago, I talked to someone in sales at KBSG and he called back and gladly extended the certificate another few months. I talked to the hotel on Friday and they said "they still have no plans to charter any planes from Seattle to Laughton".

So...my question is...what do I do? Did KBSG give away a trip, that (it seems like) can never be used? Should I be upset? Should I calm down? Are they (KBSG) off the hook since they gave the trip away, but have no control over the flights? To me...it would be like a radio station giving away a 55 inch color TV that could be picked up from Frys, but every time you try to pick it up, Frys is out of stock. Where does the responsibility of KBSG start, and where does it end?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Doesn't seem to me that there is any responsibility on the part of KBSG. They gave away a prize that they probably traded out for. What it seems like is that the people they traded out with are somehow trying to make it impossible for you to redeem that prize. Maybe KBSG can help you out with that, but the responsibility seems to be with the other company, not the radio station...Personally I've never heard of a flight from Seattle to Laughlin, NV...you might have to go into Vegas and drive across the rest of the way...or perhaps fresno, or LA...

Just my thoughts.

It sounds like this was a sales rather than a programming promotion where the client is flaking out and making the station look bad. My advice is to remain calm and professional but ask the station to provide your girlfriend with another prize of comparable value. Most stations have hotel and restaurant trade at their disposal that they would gladly use to make a problem like this go away.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.

eastsidah here is a link to the flight information. They charter planes from cites, into Laughton. Well...I guess...they say they do at least. The cites and flights listed have remained the same since April.

Are you kidding? Did "the dog ate my homework" excuse ever work in school?

KBSG is solely responsible for this, it doesn't matter if the sales or programming folks built the contest. KBSG gave away a prize, they are required to deliver. The air charter company has less culpability than KBSG.

These kinds of things are taken VERY seriously by The Commission. KBSG's problem is magnified since there is a paper trail on this.

Is it very true that KBSG would likely give out some trade to sweep this under the rug. But if the prize winner is really set on going down to Laughlin, KBSG would be wise to cough up the airfare themselves.

If the prize winner does not receive the prize she won, I would highly recommend contacting an attorney (just the threat should be enough). But also, mention to KBSG that a letter will be going to the FCC. Those kinds of letters are reviewed upon receipt and when KBSG's license is up for renewal.
