Essentially, with CBS-owned stations becoming the CW affiliate in S.F. and Detroit, AM Media is backing away from the deal (even though they apparently have not cancelled it), and Granite has been getting inquiries from parties interested in acquiring the stations as affiliates.

$180M is the price for both the S.F. and Detroit stations, combined.

Really sad if you think about this...KIFR (106.9) garnered 90 million..
and sad ..ACON was only offering 83 million for KBWB..the rest was Detroit which has the 62 Detroit Pistons games each year.

This is only good for us over here at KBWB. It was really a lousy deal anyway.

Could TBN buy KBWB and it's sister station in Detroit??

According to the TBN website, the network is not available over-the-air in San Francisco, and also is not on most area cable systems. Buying KBWB will immediately put TBN on local cable systems under the "must-carry" rules.

TBN is on a low-power station in Detroit, but I suspect a full-power station would mean more area cable systems would have to carry the Detroit station, again under "must-carry" rules.

After all, a couple of years back, TBN purchased WGTW-48 in the Philadelphia area for the sole reason of getting on local cable systems. TBN has long been known for acquiring TV stations as a gateway for getting on cable. Over-the-air viewers are a "bonus" for them.

TBN would be better for KBWB/SF than 24 hour Infomercials

Unless KBWB changes to a Retro-TV Rerun channel(ala TV Land type programming), the only moneymaker type of format for TV 20 is either 24 hour Religious or 24 hour infomercials. In my opinion, Religious prgramming is the lesser of two evils(just a figure of speech). I would rather watch Religious programming than Infomercials.

I know that in the early days of UHF Television, it was common for some stations to fold up and surrender their license, but I am curious, If Granite did turn off KBWB and surrender their license, Would it be a Tax write off or would it be a loss of money to the company? Would the FCC just reissue the license to another company or would they delete Channel 20 forever? Wouldn't it be better financially for Granite to donate Channel 20 to a non profit company for Tax Write Off purposes if they can't find a buyer?

Great. More reason to keep paying for cable or satellite. Between HBO, On-Demand, Comedy Central, BBC Americia, and F/X for their original series like The Shield - I rarely tune in the local independent stations anyway. For that matter, there are only a few shows I watch on the old Top 3 networks. About once a week, I'll tune in KRON4 for news at 9:00 if I've planned to watch something else at 10:00. The 9:00 News is the only smart programming decision Young Broadcasting has made - I guess because it had been successful at KCAL.
 
Another Option For KBWB

Today (February 22nd), Fox announced that they would launch "My TV Network", a service that will distribute programming to Fox-owned UPN stations (who will lose their affiliations after the UPN/WB merger) as well as other UPN and WB stations who will likewise become independents after the merger.

A thread on this subject has started on the National TV Board.

Given that San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose is one of the largest TV markets, I suspect KBWB-20 would become a prime contendor to be the Bay Area home of this proposed programming service.

But then again, KRON-4 could also become interested.

However my bet is it will be KICU-36 to get it.

I would not necessarily count you chickens before they hatch. TV20 has made a good offer to Fox for My TV...Fox's relationship with Cox may not be as good as some may think.

We will know within 3-4 weeks who get the My TV affiliation. The one program that will be carried on My TV is Desire. Fox pulled that from the syndication market when the UPN/WB demise was announced. Time will tell fellas...

BTW, Granite will never sell to TBN or DAYSTAR no matter what.

Moot point, since KRON won't be on VHF either.

Furthermore, the whole VHF/UHF angle has become nearly irrelevant, if not completely so, since FOX became a viable 4th network, and moreso now with the advent of DTV.<P ID="signature">______________

Well Bill, it looks like TV20's offer to Fox for My Network TV affiliation was not good enough, considering the announcement of KRON 4 getting it.
