KC 101 Lowest Rated New Haven Station

Looks like in the New Haven ratings KC 101 got beat by 99.1 WPLR, 94.3 WYBC, WQUN, WELI. Four Hartford stations also beat out KC 101 which is Country 92.5, Hot 93.7, River 105.9, WCCC 106.9. Also Star 99.9, WEBE 108 and in New York City WFAN 660 beat out KC 101.

At least they didn't get beat out by Kiss or Power in the Hartford Market. But these ratings for KC 101 have to say something.

Where were these diaries taken from? Keep in mind that New Haven is a separate radio market from Hartford. I check "KC-101" and WYBC-FM (94.3) from New Haven quite frequently. (I live in New Britain's south end.) <P ID="signature">______________

Hell I listen to kc-101 from greenwich on occation. 101.1 does not damage it much down here. too bad I can't say that for any other ct station (north of bridgeport.)
how has kc-101 done in the bridgeport-norwalk market?

WAVZ Doesn't Even Show

I thought it might have been a mistake in the Spring 05 book but this is at least two books in a row that WAVZ doesn't even show!

As an alumni of this station in its Top 40 heyday I feel very sad.

I must say, ever since they've been on their new tower, I've found that the Hartford CC stations come in better along the shoreline than does KC101. I wonder if this has any effect.

I also think the Hartford CC stations have their processing set much cleaner and clearer than KC101; KC101's audio is BEATEN to death!

I do not have access to the demo breakdowns, so it's hard to say how KC101 does in its target audience, nor do I know how they bill ... but I do wonder how long CC will let this happen before we see more tweaking.

Ok it's Stamford-Norwalk, and I don't think they do anything..as for Bridgeport, KC101 is usually in the top 5, so a pretty strong standing. Keep in mind people that these are 12+ numbers that mean nothing. Kiss 95.7 also chocked in New Haven also, may have been a low book for CHR in total. From what I heard last, KC101 does well in demos.

According to the newest New Haven book. Take a look see.

I would hate to see a old station like KC 101.3 change formats. But look at how good sister station KISS 95.7 did in the Hartford Market.

I don't understand why KC101 has to squash their audio so much. The Hartford Clear Channel stations sound much, much better and they are just as loud although I don't know why the mic breaks on WHCN sound distorted. None of the other CC stations have this problem.

WAVZ went progressive talk in November 2004 and has done absolutely no promotion.

Do you think KC101 or someone else should go Rhythm and Gold? Check out the format's demo at
http://www.zapoleon.com/zms/RNG/RhythmNGold.html

I agree KC 101 needs to fix their audio... and play songs at their normal speed. I don't know about you guys but I hate it when stations speed up their music... it just doesn't sound right to me.

I've also noticed that here on the shoreline KC 101's signal is not that strong unless you're closer to New Haven.

It really doesn't matter how they've done in other markets. They are a New Haven Market station. The sales staff sells off the New Haven book. The New Haven ratings are all that really matter.

> Did anyone really expect this station to succeed? I have listened to and analyzed KC101 for the last month. It is programmed poorly. It is managed poorly. Sales are a disaster, and overall leadership is non-existent. I know someone on the inside and they say that this place is a revolving door. Its a shame too. Last book they looked like they were turning a corner. They were out on the streets everywhere, pulling off huge concert events and they were really giving all of the Hartford and New Haven stations a run for their money. They were highly visible and they sounded great. What the heck happened over the spring and summer months? Did the staff change? That morning show is unlistenable, the host is a self centered buffoon. The station sounds unfocused. Did they lose key managers? What is the deal with KC101? From a media buyers perspective I would have to say my money is going to KISS, HOT and Power.

LOL....Sounds like you were either a promotions person who was FIRED or maybe an old intern for the morning bufoon. I fail to see how the station is a "revolving door" seems like the staff has been there for a while with the exception of a new mid day jock.
It seems like this was an extremely male book I didn't see Kiss doing well in New Haven so why "as a media buyer" would you spend your clients money on them?
Enjoy your next few months thinking that KC 101 won't ever succeed without you....Extreme books like this usually have a way of leveling out and those who did VERY well as in an extreme growth usually fall back down as those who got totally wrecked come back up.
You should spend a little more time on your "Paper rout" and less time wishing ill fate on those who don't want or need you around.

CC Stations use MP2's in the nexgen system. The songs are pretty compressed so they loose a lot of quality. Songs come from a corperate delivery syatem that goes right into their on-air system. they are usually pretty compressed and very poor quality. Some stations however will re-dub the songs in themselves for better quality.

No that has nothing to do with the speed. Sound quality, maybe, but your production director is to make sure the sound quality is top notch. All corporately owned CHRs have to follow a guidline that says they have to speed up the songs 2 or 3 percent depending on which company it is. The idea is that CHR listeners want a more upbeat sound. While a lot of people complain about it, stations still do it. Z100 is the only CHR I know that plays songs at normal speed..why? because they bill so much for CC, they can do what they want.

Go ahead and defend your pals, the numbers and the lack of revenue speak volumes. You can't hide from that. The staff on and off the air is in constant transition. What happened to the sales staff? No one was wishing this disaster of a station ill fate, they do a good enough job of that on their own. I was just hoping someone could come up with a reasonable answer as to why they are such a mess. Looks like you are towing the local company line of creating a smoke screen. Look they made some mistakes, it's time to clean house from the top to bottom and get this station on the right track. All of the other stations are passing them by.

Oh boy...you got me. The ol' you can't spell thing....
Well I guess I have NO idea about radio, ratings, or how to grow goofy a@@ sideburns...;)
I once again ask....What MAJOR on air staff changes have been made over the last year?? The only 2 I remember were a mid day guy taking a gig in another market and the dismissal of some extremely lame weekender who used to constantly refer to his im on the air...I believe it was something like "I heart (insert his name here)" THAT my friend is a self centerd idiot...
Having said that I must run along...Time to install spell check..;)
I suggest before you claim a station a sinking ship you look at the whole picture...Not just 12 plus numbers...Look at day parts, tsl, numbers in surrounding markets...ie. B-Port, Danbury, Hartford...and you will see that sinking ship could NOT be farther from the truth.

I'm not taking a side....but advertisers don't care about other markets, just New Haven. Just a thought. Or they would search for a more local station.

Actually, some agency buys come from a combined market buy...ie B-port/New Haven...it is not a usual practice but happens from time to time...The point I was making is that it seems like KC 101 got a bad break in the New Haven market...it hardly makes them a sinking ship...if that were the case wouldn't they have tanked everywhere??
And BTW/ looking at 12+ numbers on a 6a to 12a does not really show the station's gains or losses....lets look at target demo's...I bet that tell a much different story.
Anyway...I think it is time to move on....We'll discuss after the NEXT book...Spring 06....Till then...happy posting :)

Oh the old "wait till next year" quote. Plueeessssseeeee! What is that I hear? Ah yes the KC 101 Death Rattle.(Mornings from 6am-10am and all day for that matter ) The books that this station produced are sub par. This last book is a testament to poor programming and management. Combined market buys for your information are more evidence that KC 101 is not that strong in New Haven. Their cost per point has gone down again. This is the real issue here. 12+ Numbers, target demos and combined market buys mean nothing when spots are being sold for pennies. Clear Channel Corporate needs to make some decisions here. These sticks can generate the revenue provided they are managed properly. I will agree with this it is time to move on...for the programmers and managers at KC 101. By the way what do sideburns have to do with poor performance? If groomed properly they can be quite practical in the cold weather.
