KC101's slide into mediocrity

This station will become a shack with a tower eventually. No offense to Elvis Duran, but he's not local. No wonder there's such a lack of morning shows because no one is developing any.

I think you should look at Elvis Duran's numbers in every market he is in nationally where he is not local. He is killing it in almost every one. Philly, Miami, Iowa, Richmond, etc. KC101 is much more local than any of those with many NY'ers and commuters already very familiar with his show. Local is not what sells a morning show (Howard Stern, Steve Harvey, etc) It's about compelling and fun entertainment. Not talk about the local Wal Mart or Mayor. It's a huge move to add Elvis to 101 with his track record.

Maze's show wasn't exactly "talk about the local Wal Mart". He had a great show. Well, the writing's on the wall. Last one out turn off the lights...

This does make me kind of upset for KC101. I just wish B104 in Allentown would get Elvis & the Zoo cuz I'm from the NYC area and I miss Elvis Duran when I'm not home listening. I'm so used to it everyday putting on the radio and they're on. I'd definately listen to them on my way to my 9AM or 9:30 classes in the morning.

Indeed there is a significant overlap between the KC101 and Z100 coverage areas. There are parts of New Haven proper where you will be able to hear Elvis on 100.3 and 101.3!

The response hasn't been positive of KC-101's Facebook page. In fact it even confused a couple of listeners saying they couldn't figure out how their radio got tuned to Z-100. Then they heard promos for KC-101.

EVERY morning show has loyal listeners who will be upset when a show goes off the air. The worst TV show on network TV has half a million people who will be upset when it's canceled. That said, Elvis' show is killing in markets that didn't know his show and loved their local show. I read a petition against them in Richmond VA. They now have the largest #s in station history.

Sometimes it IS about keeping it local. Where's the bench? Where's the development of talent? When all these syndicated morning shows start sounding less and less local and more and more generic, that's when the satellite radio or the iPod win out. With many GPS units now providing traffic information, people won't need the radio for anything. They listen because it's entertaining and it means something to them that they live in their community. Maze was out there all the time doing things WITH his listeners. Plus, they grew up with him from the KISS 95.7 days. It's again getting harder and harder to say listeners are always going to need radio.

Except you are wrong. Research and results prove that 18-34 year old females (The demo) don't care about DJ's showing up to meet 30 people at a supermarket or club when 200,000 are listening to be entertained in the morning. Your argument is old school. Ipods do NOT win because they aren't funny or engaging. It does NOT mean anything that the host lives in their community. What is FUNNY about that? Howard Stern and Steve Harvey and Elvis and other syndicated shows have proven what I am writing. People want to laugh and call in and participate and hear interesting topics and big stars. Elvis' show has all of that. Listen to it for a few weeks. All that said, many KC101 listeners know Elvis from commuting and relocating and going to school in NY. Competition will yell they are local and in the long run, young women don't care. They just want to be entertained. Is Oprah local? Leno? The evening news? CNN? The world is too globally minded. This isn't opinion vs opinion. It's actual fact backed up by ratings by these shows around the country in various size markets.

They win because all they play are songs the owner knows and likes, without commercials or DJ patter. Radio, even satellite radio, can never get that listener back, because any radio station, even a commercial-free Sirius XM channel, will include some songs the listener can't stand.

one thing to keep in mind - total access routinely beat elvis in markets like bridgeport, neutral territory where you could just as easily get z100 as you could kc101. that's gotta say something, no?

personally, i don't think this has anything to do with winning or successful radio. the sole motivation here is job security for the steve honeycomb and the rest of CC Hartford/New Haven management. a cost cutting move putting elvis on the air, all the while 'buying in to the team/company philosophy. being team players.' etc.

They can change around KC 101 but keep the trash of a morning show on in Hartford on KISS 95.7 still makes no sense. Maybe they should of put Elvis on KISS and not have touched KC 101.3

Bridgeport is within 25 miles of the KC101 (and WPLR) transmitters. These New Haven stations are like local signals there the way WEZN and WEBE are in New Haven. Z100 and NYC are 55 miles away and make no attempt to associate themselves with that part of Fairfield County.

I can't speak to the motivation of CC regional management, but the trend is toward more national programming. It does seem that this is happening more among younger skewing CHR stations while more adult formats are at least holding onto local morning shows. CC at least made news/talk WELI local again in the morning. Kids and their parents aren't relying on the regional or local CHR for things like school closings and winter weather info the way baby boomers did. Sometimes bad programming makes it on the air in the name of being local. Sadly, Maze had a good local show.
